Every spring, adolescent black bears get kicked to the curb by their moms, and several wander through MoCo looking for a new home. More are seen up-county, but with all the parks - especially the long stream-valley ones like Seneca, Rock Creek, and Sligo - they move mid- and down-county, too. Much more fun than the raccoons that usually get into my trash!
Yes, everyone should be aware of this. Juvenile animals of every species are the ones who are most adventurous and most likely to naively encounter humans. Many are on the move after being kicked out of their family group, they're looking for new territory, and they are still learning to avoid situations.
