This. My 12 year old DD goes to a teen class at The Mill CrossFit, but it’s in Vienna.

I thought until their older they should only be lifting their body weight. That’s and app and YouTube

I thought so too, but apparently that’s the old way of thinking and now kids as young as 8 can use weights with correct form and supervision. There is a nonzero chance that my 11 year old would hurt himself by dropping a weight on his toe, so I’m good with him waiting a few years. He does go to athletic republic every so often - mainly because I want to prevent injury by learning to stretch and keep conditioned. Eventually, I want them or someone else to teach him how to use weights and all the gym equipment. Not sure if they do that.

My son goes to EST in Herndon. He does speed & strength. Started in 7th grade.

C5teite.com has a great strength and conditioning program for that age. There’s a lot of baseball happening there, but there is a whole program for the personal training that is separate. The guys are really good with the tween ages!

I'd look for small group classes or training at gym near you. Many have teen membership options - our kids had OneLife memberships as teenagers.

I am not in NoVa, but plenty of my kids’ friends from sports have personal trainers and are under 18.

how much does Capstone cost? Do they work with kids who are not super focused on traditional team sports? My son wants to build strength for rock climbing but doesn't like most team sports.

My kids and quite a few of their friends really like D1 training in Alexandria. Age and developmentally appropriate training to increase overall athleticism — agility, ploy, body weight. With our older kid I slow played and didn’t really understand why people started this stuff in middle school — now with the younger one I’m a believer. Physical confidence and injury prevention benefits are most important to me as a parent.

OP here, because I'm an attorney and not a professional PT? Same reason I don't homeschool him? But also as a previous poster said, kids have different needs than I, a 47 yo woman have and understand, when it comes to training. Whereas I work with my physical therapist to not pee myself every time I laugh, sneeze, or cough, I don't think my 11yo son needs to do the same exercises?

I'm following this because I have an 11 year old with the same interest in the same area, but I'm also a fit but fat 47 year old attorney and loved this reply. Maybe we'll meet at our kids' new trainer!

My kid (DS 11) has a personal trainer at a gym because he is very active in his sport but still has some core weaknesses. I'm concerned that he will be injured because of those weaknesses. He's lifting free weights and body weight. The free weights aren't very heavy. I much prefer 1:1 because of form. And I'm not concerned with trainer working with him in the busy gym.

Anyone know of someone who does this in DC or Silver Spring?

Try Healthy Baller in Rockville. We've loved it there.
