Chelsea Handler: Is there something wrong with her?

“Life will be the death of me”

Most of her issues (she says) stems from the trauma of losing her brother who was her idol/best friend/most stable parental type figure in her life.

I am similar to her, in many respects (I drink, curse, DGAF to an extent, like to say whatever for the effect among friends, love deadpan/dry humor, love to exit) We 're about the same age, and I agree with a lot of her ideas/opinions, except when she gets ugly/obnoxious, which I just saw in her doc "Chelsea Does ..." which was done a few years ago but new to me. In the 4 part series, she "does" marriage (loved it), drugs (loved it), Silicon Valley (has its moments) and ... racism (couldn't watch the whole thing, she needed an editor, I give her credit for overall decent intentions, but demerits for cringe-ful, super awkward execution)

I am wondering WTH is wrong with her (because some of it might apply to me). Could you guess for Chelsea a mental health diagnosis? She admits she qualifies as alcohol dependent. She considers that she is ADD. (I have ADD and drink too much, but I am not insanely confident like Chelsea, and don't have nearly as much money, although I am rich). Ot could be trauma. Or personality disorder. Or just what people with above afflictions do when they have boats of money and a need for attention?

Chelsea did not come from money… at all. Her dad was a used car salesman who was unemployed half the time.

Well, I disagree that she was pushed as a bill of goods. That's some weird conservative energy right there. From what I can see, she worked hard and is fairly brilliant. As far as who she is, she's one manifistation of our culture, circa 1975ish when she was born (not sure that's correct, but within a couple years ok)

Not a conservative. Lol. Watched her show at its peak and even read her first couple of books on airplanes. She has always been human trash. And the glorification of what she pushed ruined a lot of lives — including her own.

"What she pushed" -- what's that? Not a baby? Look, the perspectives of women outside norms have always been welcome relief to other women outside norms. What's with the paranoia that a woman slept around, had abortions, talked about it, is going to corrupt girls uninterested in those ideas?

Best way to ensure your daughters stay on straight/narrow is to actually be a great parent, if you know how. You have weird ideas, so I doubt it.

She NOW has boats of money, of her own making.

She kicked down and treated staff and guests (and even her family!) like dirt on air because she was suddenly a multi-millionaire and was banging the powerful E! executive. Good to see she’s a miserable lonely spinster. Karma.

Eh that's kinda her schtick though. I wouldn't take it personally.

I hated her on E! but love her now. I think she has really evolved, as hopefully most of us have.

Just post on the Book Club Forum and ask for a recommendation for Chelsea's autobiography. That's the point of your long post, right?

Thanks for clarifying. At first I thought I wanted speculation on CH's mental disorders, but this thread made it clear to me that I actually want a book recommendation. I am fascinated by Chelsea Handler. Seems like a good idea to go with the most recent one, in which she'll be her most evolved. But no, I won't start another topic about it

OP the latest book she talks about her life, struggles, and journey to therapy/meditation. The other books are humorous / comedy and not serious at all.

Thank you, that's useful.

She’s broken. She’s documented her childhood and she’s open about her issues. But her false bravado masks insecurity and her faux confidence fuels “Look at me!” behavior for attention and shock value. She’s alone because she’s selfish and incapable of putting a partner before her. It’s a lack of maturity coupled with a lack of real interest in anyone other than herself. The addiction goes hand in hand with the anxiety and depression.

In short: a self-centered know it all pretending to be Uber confident…like most comics.

And I’m a fan who’s seen her shows, read her books, etc. She’s still funny. I just feel sad for her.

I listen to her podcast and she has evolved quite a bit from her earlier E personality / comedy style. She is actually very well read, quite articulate and spends a lot of time encouraging women (call in format) to be more confident. Her guests include other self help gurus like Glennon Doyle and Laura Lynn Jackson.

I saw her birth year in her bio as 1975. No way. More like 1965.
