Fall sports tryouts & travel

Because teams have workouts and camps that kids with parents in the know have been attend for years

So if a military family gets transferred to NOVA in late August, the kid doesn't get to play sports?

WTF?

If it's a cut sport for fall, no, that kid probably isn't going to get to be on the team unless they are some kind of super-talent. Even then, there might not be a spot. This is how it's always been.

He/she can probably still do something like cross country, though.

Different high schools will have different sports that are "cut" and "no cut" sports.

But no your child is not likely to make a "cut" sport if they miss tryouts. Its always the first week of August each year for fall sports.

Here is every tryout date through 2025 for those interested:

Also, don't plan to vacation after tryouts because they immediately launch into a pretty intense practice schedule and games often begin before school begins.

The more you know...

What if a kid has a summer job. Have food to eat or tryout for a team? Harsh reality for some. (Understand that is not OP’s issue).

Also, dates may be “well known” but do not seem to be posted at present. Bad system to punish kids who aren’t “in the know.”

It's sports, not math. it's a nice-to-have, and its value is going to come from its quality. You want a top team? You need to do tryouts early so you can get focused on practices and skills.

I guess I don't care that much? Imagine if schools spent this level of effort on academics, which is you know, THE WHOLE POINT OF SCHOOL. I would love for schools to adapt the kind of rigor put into sports teams into kids' learning.

Are you insane? Schools DO put this much effort into academics. Unfortunately most of the effort does go towards "equity." Schools can't "cut" the kids who are way behind and just can't cut it. Sports can. Like PP said, sports is not an entitlement like free education.

The calendar is set years in advance for Virginia public schools. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CkXzenAfMXDYUUiwWL8hy5mL4EXW6-nd/view

Both of you are idiotic. School focus is reading, writing, arithmetic, etc. Sports are an add on. BUT I promise you that the crime rate in this country would drop double digit points if all HSs required a sport each season. There is enormous value in being physically active outdoors everyday. We are animals. We are meant to be outside.

The amount of kids missing sports tryouts is negligible and only happens once. After that the kid and parents hopefully are smart enough to figure it out. As posted already, the dates are known well in advance for this very reason. Your vacation schedule is of no concern to the coaches.
