For residential schools will they come get your child?

Most states have a fairly low age of consent for mental health treatment, so if you are thinking of a therapeutic boarding school or residential treatment facility, your child has to be willing to be admitted or it has to be located in a state with a higher age of consent to treat. If you are asking about transport, I’m assuming your teen is not willing to get treatment. It’s very difficult. There are options but not easy or affordable ones.

I totally get being at the end of your rope and feeling like you’re out of options, but I’d love to hear from folks (children) who have been through this process and come out the other side. I’d think it also depends on what kind of “school” you’re talking about.

I know several parents who say this saved their kid’s life.

PP asked what the kid thought.

And the kids I know agree that it was life changing. There is a broad range of these programs. Some are excellent and others are not. If you haven’t had to look at them and consider such a drastic step, then you may not know the resources people use to evaluate and select a program and it’s easy to assume they are all abusive.

This is DCUM so you’re not going to hear from children here. But I think mine would tell you it was life changing, extremely difficult, and necessary to prevent him from suiciding. It’s been years and my kid continues to use his RTC therapists.

OP, the program I used had a list of transport services. I found one that would even meet me if I tried on my own and could not get my kid to the program. It would have cost more if I had to use it but the risk was worth it to me because the cost of service was so high and I knew I was going to be paying a ton of money for residential treatment.

From what I read on DCUM adults rarely thank their parents for anything. More like blame them for everything.

Most of DCUM don't have children that would require such services, and thus can't fathom, and they'll still comment like they have experienced it.

OP do what you need to for your child right now in this moment. If this is what is needed for them at this time do it. Plenty of time for therapy in the future to explain your choices if your child asks.

How old is your kid now? How often do you talk to him?

Have you read about some of the practices at Diamond Ranch? They are abusive, not therepeutic. I can definitely appreciate that some kids may need residential therapy … but it’s got to be actually therepeutic. The “bootcamp” places that regularly kidnap kids are not therepeutic.

Parents. I’m sure my parents would claim this.

There are literally no circumstances under which this would be a good idea.

I’m pretty sure suicide or violence against others would qualify.

8:28 here, thanks so much for proving my point!

Why are they so secretive? Why do they monitor kids’ phone calls with their parents?

Zero chance the child will thank you later. Zero.
