I am so happy with my reusable menstrual disc and I need to share my joy with someone

I liked a lot of things about the disc but when it was time to remove it I was in tears from frustration and panic. It took me at least 45 minutes and I thought I’d have to drive myself to the ER for help. Also it claims leak-free period sex and this was NOT the case.

Count me in as another convert. Switched to softdisc recently and loving it.

NP. That’s great for you. Hormonal birth control puts me in a deep depression.

Tell me about this auto dump from the disk. I love my cup but feel like it may be irritating my urethra as I get closer to menopause. Now when I use it I feel like I have a UTI coming on.

Oof I am so sorry, that sounds awful. Definitely one of the downsides is that everyone's anatomy is different and it's hard to predict whether a product will work for you. It may be there are less rigid ones (made of silicone instead of plastic) or getting one that has a pull tab could potentially help with these types of issues, but yeah these products don't work for everyone unfortunately.

Basically when the disc is getting full and you urinate or have a bowel movement, it will empty itself into the toilet. The disc itself stays in place for me and doesn't need to be repositioned. The risk of this is potential autodumping when you are not on the toilet. It has happened to me on one of my first cycles using it when I didn't put it in properly (needs to be pushed and tucked in). Fortunately I was at home.

I do wear a back up pad with this. Might explore period underwear for back up.

One benefit of the disc is that it doesn't have anything hanging down in your vagina like the cup does (well the ones will the pull tab might). So that may help with the irritation you are talking about. With the cup you can also try cutting off the stem if you don't need it to find the cup for removal.

Oooo thanks OP I’m going to try this. I have a Mirena but I still get a period because of my Power Uterus. But it’s kind of unpredictable so I feel like a disc would help me not have to think about it.

FWIW not all discs auto dump (thankfully!) the nixit does not and minus it being a little messier to empty I am secure in knowing it won’t overflow. I use a liner or Thinx as a backup method as my job is very physical plus picking up little kids.

I was a cup user for decades, but switched to this during menopause, because it seemed to fit better and it’s a bit softer.

Huh, I thought whether a disc autodumps depends more on the person and how their disc fits them rather than on the brand

I don't think there is a secret unfortunately. Based on my reading, it sounds like each person's experience can be different based on their anatomy. I did see there is a resuable menstrual disc on the market with a removal tab that could help with that. I haven't tried it. I use one with a removal notch though that is not reliable because if the disc rotates you can't reach the notch (but I haven't really had major issues with removal in any case).

Secret is break suction before pulling. Use your finger to slide past the rim and break the seal before pulling.

They aren’t supposed to auto-dump. But would guess anatomy and placement are a factor

That probably reads harshly it didn’t mean they’re not supposed to. It’s not like a built-in feature. It just happens depending on how it’s placed and your personal anatomy. The seal can break when your using bathroom and either pops back or can be easily repositioned once your finished.

Likely. I only mention it in case some else doesn’t have that happen. Mine usually needs to be taken out to empty. Which is no biggie. I do take a damp paper towel into stall jic for hands. Heavy flow and all. Still greatly prefer to all other methods even it it’s not on automatic! Also I love your post.

I clicked on this thread out of interest -- I still just used tampons (and hate them) because the first time I tried using a cup, it was so horrible I deemed it not worth it (way too tricky to put in and then getting it out was somehow worse, did not feel comfortable in my body, stressed about overflow and spills so wound up wearing a liner which I also hate, etc. etc.).

But this sounds worse somehow? Basically, I would like to avoid any situation that has me digging around in my vagina trying to remove something while I'm on my period. I don't want to spend 30 minutes removing my period device! Even if it's only once a day.

This is the one aspect of menopause I look forward to -- no more periods. Our grandmothers had it right. It really is The Curse!

I tried the cup for an entire year and could not get it to not leak. I tried but I’m back to tampons.
