If an Asian kid got into one of those schools, and major in some serious science or engineering, then I would be impressed.

Also, some schools are major-dependent, e.g., engineering at GaTech (but not other disciplines)

For grad school, it's very field-dependent. Iowa, for example, is extremely competitive for creative writing.
