Sanna Marin came in third.

She had so much free press, attractive aesthetic, led her country into NATO..

..and still came third behind Conservative Party and far right party.

Virtually impossible for her to retain her premiership now

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the NATO part sank her. It was an emotional over-reaction to temporary events, with long-lasting consequences.

I hope that you brought a parachute out on the limb with you because you will need it:

A change of government is expected to have little impact on Finland’s security stance, with the NCP a firm backer of the country’s accession to NATO and military support for Ukraine.

The three major parties are all NATO supporters and the election appears to have centered on domestic economic issues rather than foreign policy.

Somewhere around 25% of the Finnish electorate still opposes NATO membership, and they have no real home in the major parties. Those 25% are on the far end of left and right. You don't think in an election where the difference between first and third place is less than 1%, that these people can't swing an election? I would also characterize the Finns party as a at best a half-hearted supporter of NATO membership, who will probably agitate for leaving NATO in less than a year.

The NYT reported even though she lost in a very tight race-- she is still popular in Finland. The tough economy likely beat her according to NYT.

Some many words just to say:
75% of Finns support joining NATO.

And the limb broke….

With Russia attacking the Ukraine and a Finland having a long border with Ukraine, everyone in this election agreed NATO membership was necessary.

Sanna herself is still popular, and her party actually gained three seats. But her left leaning coalition lost a bunch of seats, so the conservative coalition had enough votes to unseat her.

NP. I have wondered if this is a quiet backlash against gender self-ID laws and particularly women politicians pushing for them. Sanna pushed for a self-ID law in Finland which became law in February. It is remarkably similar to what happened to Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland, whose disastrous support of self-ID caused her exodus after a very long tenure. There is open discussion in New Zealand about whether Jacinda Ardern’s promotion of self-ID was turning people against her.

The problem is that self-ID laws don’t do anything to protect women from predators that will abuse them (see the rapist case that triggered Sturgeon’s downfall) and voters know that, but the political discourse is so hostile that voters don’t even feel comfortable talking about those issues.

Maybe it’s unrelated entirely, but I wonder.
