Why people try to paint DC in a bad light by highlighting every bad things they can find?

Me neither. Also, something to consider: this is likely your kids’ hometown unless you are really only stopping by for a couple of years. So, your kids are growing up in a crappy place? Nice. When you are in Europe vacationing you tell everyone how you live in this awful place and how much better Dallas, TX is or Tampa, FL? And your kids think this? Your kids think they live in a crap place and that they would be so much happier if they lived in Charleston, SC or Cary, North Carolina or one of these other places people are always touting? Please.

It’s possible to love DC without shoving your head in the sand (or somewhere else) about obvious and simple improvements that could be made.

The right does seem committed to the end of civilization narrative these days.

I don’t think the narrative is coming from people that live here. I live here and will openly admit that it has problems that I’d like to see fixed or my family will move. But overall I think it’s a wonderful city. However our country LOVES bad news and republicans in particular love to capitalize on every bit of bad news they hear about a blue city, so the narrative gets spread.

I love DC and yet I don’t have to look very far to “find things”. Even wounded and dead people right outside. Not joking. All in the last year.

So bad things are real, they are becoming overwhelming and must be addressed

Where do you live? I’ve lived in DC a long time and in other cities. Crime here is getting worse.

Crime is not getting worse. Give me a break. I've been here for 35 years - in the city.

Where in the city, though? All the progress we made in Adams Morgan from 2000-2019 has very perceptibly been reversed.

Even little things. The metro is much more chaotic now than in the 90s when I started riding.

DC isn’t all that big. It’s not a hellscape but considering the wealth here it is REALLY poorly governed.

DC isn't really that bad in absolute terms, but it really falls far short of what it should be. The city is so poorly and spitefully run that it manages to squander all the advantages that being the capital of the most prosperous empire on earth should convey.

I do agree with this. I've lived in a few cities, and they all have pros and cons. Personally, DC is my favorite, but that's just a personal preference. However, none of the other cities has the detractors that spit such pure vitriol about it. Hating on DC is like a hobby for some people.

My theory is that DC has a lot of people who live here, not by choice, because of the job market. Whereas the other cities I've lived in mostly have people who chose to live there, so by definition they like it more.

OP DC crime is increasing vastly, not sure what your motive is to make it seem like it's not:

In 2022 DC had 42 homicides. In 2023-we are only 2 months in there have been 45 homicides already. Sex crimes for 2022 are 18 for 2023 there are already 38. This is what is being reported. There are a lot of crimes lately people are not reporting because they don't want to call the police for fear or they don't want to call the police because they think they police isn't enforcing anything so these are just whats been reported, so there's a good chance some crimes are even much higher.

But this is also the case in many cities. Example: Atlanta. People are losing their damn minds. Buckhead is basically trying to secede. But you don’t see the entire country in an uproar about it. Or maybe they are and I just only notice the news about DC because I live here. Or maybe the uproar is because DC is the nation’s capital. I don’t really know, but there’s definitely something unique about the reaction to DC’s crime when it’s a nationwide problem.

I am born and raised in DC but am now a Marylander. I have to say I see way more posts with DC locals complaining about tourists and people from MD and VA than the other way around. The message I get is that people in DC hate everyone but themselves. Frankly I love DC, think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but it does have some issues.

And Democrats don't love to capitalize on every bit of bad news they hear about a red state?

Lots of people who moved to the suburbs want to make sure they retroactively justify their decision.
