Yes it was inevitable … I could never have an abortion myself but passionately support abortion rights for many reasons. A major one is that many women/ girls will either die or suffer greatly if forced to give birth. It is shocking that maternal death rates are rising so quickly though … |

OB/GYNs are avoiding the Southern states that are anti-abortion and obstructed the ACA and Medicaid expansion. Here is the 3rd Mississippi hospital to end labor and delivery because they are short of staff.
Gulfport hospital ‘suspends’ obstetric services, offers no date they will resume https://mississippitoday.org/2023/03/02/singing-river-gulfport-hospital-to-end-labor-and-delivery-services/ Singing River Health System will stop offering labor and delivery and other obstetric services at its Gulfport hospital starting April 1, joining two other Mississippi hospitals that have recently done the same. “Like many health systems across the nation, we currently face a shortage of OB physicians,” the statement from the hospital said. “While the decision to suspend services was not something we wanted to do, we are hopeful it is only temporary and that we can reinstate services in the near future.” Ochsner Medical Center in Hancock County closed its labor and delivery unit in the summer of last year. In the Mississippi Delta, Greenwood Leflore Hospital announced it was eliminating its labor and delivery unit in the fall. |
Only because pro choice women who think their fellow women are full human beings worthy of human rights still live in Mississippi do I not laugh outright at this. If this were 100% a “but I didn’t think the leopards would eat my face!” situation, my sides would hurt from the laughter. Prevent doctors from practicing medicine purely for political reasons and they tend to go somewhere where they can practice medicine. |
So I couldn’t read the WSJ article but the NPR one said that this sharp spike was caused by covid. But in coming years it’s going to be caused by forced birth policies and a lack of obstetric care in forced birther states. The NPR article didn’t tease out specifics of the covid deaths, but I seem to remember reading that covid’s clotting problems were uniquely bad for pregnant women with all the health challenges that pregnancy already presents. |

COVID certainly had an effect, but this isn't new. The US lacks adequate prenatal and postpartum care across the board. We need national standards and development of a national program to put in place adequate prenatal and postpartum care. Most of that care could be handled by nurses or midwives. A very first step would be to require private insurers to cover postpartum care. https://www.mhtf.org/topics/maternal-health-in-the-united-states/ https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2020/nov/maternal-mortality-maternity-care-us-compared-10-countries |
| This is a feature, not a bug, of the GQP Christofascist agenda. If the poor sluts die in childbirth, it’s that much easier to steal their babies and give them to “more deserving” couples without any of that welfare or open adoption nonsense. Everyone knows good wealthy Christian women won’t die, they’ll always get good care. |
Not for privileged white males. |
I know that. The specific and sharp rise in 2021 was caused by covid though. Texas’s maternal mortality rate started climbing several years ago when their obsession with controlling women really got going. Turns out that not providing birth control, abortion services and care to pregnant women has a negative effect. Who knew. |
Yep.

Do you even hear yourself? Nobody is "stealing" babies. Good God. You people are sick. |
