Front brakes and rotor replacement cost

That price seems fine.

I usually buy the brake pads from autozone, call you the Brakesquad who come to your house and change the pads, and done. It’s about 200 bucks total.

Check to see if your rotors are truly bad or not though.

200 front and rear?

I was just quoted $670 for my 2021 MB glc 300. I don’t know the mechanic well and he’s saying my rotors and pads need changing to stop the occasional squeak coming from them when I bake up. He claims they are rusted. I’m not sure I trust this. The car has 16,000 miles.

Lots of things can cause a squeak including being worn out and ready for replacement. That’s pretty low mileage for replacement, do you not drive much? Could be the reason they are rusty. Regular driving will clean that right up. Any other issues you are experiencing besides squeaks?

An hour to change front brakes and rotors in your driveway? That is assuming you are proficient at that. Would be a lot longer for someone doing this for the first time. Especially if you run into issues such as a seized caliper, rotor rusted onto hub, etc.

Someone who doesn't know what they're doing should not be working on their brakes. I don't care how many youtube videos are out there. The braking system is the absolute LAST thing a noob should be working on.

I disagree. Changing front brakes was the first job I ever done on a car. And it was and still is one of the easiest to do and hardest to mess up.

I agree, brakes are pretty straightforward to change. Diagnosing the problems is harder.

+1 it is pretty straightforward. Either the brake pads are on or they aren’t.

No other issues. I drive at least 5 days a week. Went to my old reliable mechanic and he told me to keep driving. That I don’t need any of this. Car brakes squeak when I back up only. He said moisture in the pads may cause this. I only have 16k miles and garage park. I am considering getting rid of it. I’m used to a Lexus that required minimal. Not sure what I would get in its place though.

Thanks for coming back with an update OP. Sounds like no new brakes for now.

Sorry, I am not OP. I am another P who had a high quote for my MB. I took my brakes to my old Lexus mechanic and he told me I do not need rotors and why rust may happen overnight. ???? I will live with the screechng brake sound when I back up for now. Cringe.
Thanks for coming back with an update OP. Sounds like no new brakes for now.

The quoted cost is not high for Mercedes parts. However, I would not change the pads/rotors for this sound issue. It sounds like your mechanic doesn't know the cause of the squeal and is suggesting a general braking replacement to fix the problem. Rust on rotors is not generally not a problem unless you leave your car for months or the car has been in a flood. There is typically some surface rust of rotors after driving in rain, and this rust is worn off after a couple of stops.

I don't understand how this braking sound is not a warranty issue. I would ask dealer to lubricate between brake pads and calipers and to make sure than none of the clips holding the pads came lose or were initially installed incorrectly (backwards), allowing the pads to move slightly. Also, try doing a couple of hard stops when driving car to set the pads.

Reasonableness of the estimate depends on the parts. It would cost $300+ for original Nissan rotors and name brand pads, so the labor cost of $200 is not crazy. If the estimate used non-name parts and pads (which costs maybe $150), estimate is high.

Thanks for this reminder. My car should still be under warranty. Appreciate the reminder. Duh.

If you have any DIY aptitude, brakes are not difficult on most cars. First time will be a learning curve for sure but if you have multiple cars, maybe teenagers, ect...learn it, it can save thousands over time. $500 is not that much as a quote. You might find $400 somewhere but the Subaru dealer quoted me $600+ per axle recently (I figured I'd ask even though I planned on doing it).
