Few years ago my son with slightly higher GPA 93 and lower SAT 1520, got into Dartmouth ED
No Hooks College counselors are very capable of helping you to the process. |
| What is 92 or 93 on 4.0 GPA scale? |
| Times have changed. Ivies are unlikely without a hook. A 91 is not a 4.0, that starts at 93. A 91 is around a 3.7 or 3.8 on 4.0 scale. Kids are competing against all the public school kids with 4.0s. |

OP, your kid will make the cut for serious consideration to any school in the country. By he will be in the same boat as 20,000+ kids with the same stats and EC's.
Understand, these schools only have so many seats for the applicant pool, hence the low single digit admit rate. Pick a good ED, pick a few EA's, make sure there are some actual safties your kid likes and would be thrilled to attend. |
Why are there so many more kids in the US now with high stats (high GPA plus SAT/ACT)? Why is it more competitive versus five years ago, say? |
Folks have more info. about the college application process and the costs and benefits of attending the most selective schools. |
If you define your son in terms of his GPA and SAT score, then you need to aim lower or to apply ED to Chicago or Dartmouth. Otherwise consider ED 2 to a few LACs. |
| Villanova, Richmond, Georgetown, Northeastern, Case Western level school |
This is not the best advice. Georgetown admissions if fairly complex regarding the evaluation process. Villanova & N'eastern can surprise one. Agree regarding U Richmond & Case Western Reserve. OP: Whether or not one with these numbers applies ED can make a difference as well as the rest of the application beyond numbers. Carleton College in Minnesota is a highly ranked LAC that should be very receptive to your student's application. But, it doesn't matter if your student doesn't see & feel a fit there. ED to WFU (Wake Forest University). If interested in business and feels comfortable in an environment of students from wealthy families, then SMU should be considered. University of Virginia. University of Georgia. Emory University. ED to Tufts University. |
Maybe. Depends upon the rest of the application as to whether or not Ivies and other top 20 schools are in play. |
Common App, test optional, and rankings. Everyone applies to the same top 50 schools. |
To be fair test optional doesn’t explain the raw increase in kids with high SAT/ACT scores. Super scoring does. |
Can you elaborate regarding Georgetown being complex? |
The college office will show you the scatter plots for any college you ask and generally will explain in broad terms what conclusions you can draw from the plot. Don’t ask here. Ask them. |
With the exception of Georgetown, the kids from STA who end at places like Richmond or Northeastern have significantly lower stats. I actually don't recall anyone from STA attending Villanova or Case. |
