| you can’t even find it in NY anymore, so it’s not surprising it’s not in the DMV food hellscape. |
You know, I’ll grant that there’s no NY-style pizza here. I miss my beloved Chicago stuffed pizza or, as DH calls it, pizza casserole. But food hellscape, really? This area has incredible Southeast Asian food, of all kinds. Ethiopian. West African. Salvadoran. If you can’t find anything good to eat beyond NY-style pizza, that’s on you. |
| Ny pizza sucks as does everything else from ny |
| Andy's |

I don’t even think people even know what the mean when asking for good NY Pizza. If Andy’s or Wiseguys were in NY people would be raving about and complaining they can’t get the same in DC.
I’d love to see all these NY Pizza experts do a blind taste test. |
Maybe if you’re Michael Scott and getting your pizza from Sbarro NY pizza is amazing! So is PA pizza. And NJ pizza. Lot’s of first generation Neapolitans there. Not as many here. Hence the gross pizza.

All the NY haters!
It’s just better in NY. Like a wet hot delicious slice. And you have to tissue all the extra oil out and fold it and eat it: I am salivating just thinking about it: And yeah bagels are largely better too. |
| The Manhattan Pizza chain around here ain't half bad - that's one of the spots I've found that most closely mimics classic NY pizza to me. I go to the Clarksburg location but they have several locations in NoVa as well as the Frederick area. I found Wiseguy Pizza in DC to be the best, though, but it's been a while since I've gone. |
Yup. Years ago, I once had a blind Coke taste testing with a fellow New Yorker. We had sodas from bottling plants in DC, NYC, and one other place, in cups that were labeled on the bottom. Both of us correctly identified the NYC sodas. The difference is also stark with pizza and bagels, although I’m not sure if that’s still the case, and there might be other differences, in addition to the water. NYC tap water is also my favorite water to drink. I wish I could get bottles of it here in DC. When the Friendship Heights Whole Foods first opened, I really loved their pizza — until I didn’t. One of the pizza chefs told me that they had switched from using imported flour from Italy, to using a different type of flour. Similarly, I always thought that I hated tomatoes and tomato sauce — until I tasted Rao’s. The ingredients in a plain cheese slice are so simple, that even someone like me can taste differences in quality, even if we don’t know what variables have changed. New Haven has awesome pizza. I wonder if the water source is also a factor? I’ve also had awesome pizza in Baltimore, but it was very different from the high quality dollar slices that I got used to when I lived in NYC. |
My standard for a slice is the Rays at 6th Ave near 8th. My standard for a pie is John’s on Bleeker. I haven’t been to either in a few years, but haven’t had pizza that’s close to that here. My pizza standards were also set in New Haven, so I liked Pete’s when I had it a few years ago, and haven’t yet tried Pepe’s. I don’t eat pizza much, but I’m open to trying it if it’s good, and I’m not picky about the style. Yay: Timber. PP, I’d be happy to do a blind taste test. Lol. This thread actually reminded me that I did one with coworkers using Coke from different regional bottling plants. We nailed it. |

Agree that it must be the water.
I’ve lived in New Haven, NYC, Baltimore and DC. with regard to pizza, NYC>New Haven >>>>Baltimore>DC. The taste of the water follows roughly the same pattern. The tap water in Baltimore and DC is just awful. Strange chemically taste and an unpleasant mouthfeel. Someone could make good money by just bottling NYC water, though. |
I’ve lived in the same four cities— and would have the same overall pizza rankings that you do. For drinking tap water, though, I prefer NYC water by far. I would seriously pay to get NYC water. Seriously. I wonder if Seth Goldman or someone like that could hook a sister up? |
Good taste! I am a born and raised New Yorker, I'd be happy to do a taste test. I am pretty sure I would instantly be able to separate NY pizza from not. That said, Andy's and Wiseguy are my favorites in DC. They're not the same as NY pizza, but they are good and scratch the itch well enough. |
Do either of you have any recs for NY style pizza in Baltimore? |
