+1 My kids aren't trans, but this is a slippery slope. Yet another reason my kids don't want to go south for college.

There is a family in TX with a trans kid who had to move to CA due to TX draconian laws. These types of laws, like abortion laws, don't impact you until it does. Then what?

It's not even a law. He's using his power as governor to gather these lists of people for...reasons....?

I heard he will force them to wear a big letter T.

Probably with a pink triangle behind it.

De Santis may be on a roll with cultural wedge issues, but these tactics won't work forever.

You can only ratchet this stuff up for so long before you're literally rounding people up which is obviously what people are worried about when he's making lists of specific people without any given reason. Just basically, I want to know all the trans college students in the state. Why? Why do you need these lists? No reason. Gregg Abbot, when he wanted a list of everyone that recently changed their gender on the driver's license didn't give a reason either. He's just making lists. I'm sure it's completely innocuous.

The article says that in addition to the records they want ages of the patient and the dates they received treatment. Gender dysphoria has both a DSM diagnosis (for counseling) and an ICD 10 diagnosis (for medical issues) so I'm not clear if the records are being pulled from the counseling center, the medical center, or both.

Insider has confirmed that University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Florida A&M University, Florida International University, and the University of North Florida have complied with the request, but has yet to hear back from the rest.

I suspect they're going to try to pass a law(?) that public university funds from free counseling/medical services can't be used to treat gender dysphoria/provide gender affirming care. I don't get how turning over medical records is legal. When I was a counselor, those records included session notes.

It definitely doesn't seem legal to me. It's why Texas was targeting drivers license gender changes rather than the private medical records of adults.

They may be writing a law or something but I'm not sure why they would need people's records to do that? It actually screams making lists of undesirables. Last year there were people in FL talking about making lists of all the trans people in the state. It's really weird that they would need to identify all trans people unless they plan on targeting them specifically with something.

PII will probably be redacted. If it isn't then the schools have violated federal law and some students are going to get some nice payouts.

That was my guess too, but the article teases out "medical records" from ages and treatment dates. True medical records would need a lot of redacting to remove identifying information.

And why isn't HIPAA an issue?

If the redactions aren't made, then fines and lawsuits are going to cut into a lot of endowments.

No it will be the state of Florida who pays. The universities /colleges will release the information to the state government not to the general public. After that Florida assumes legal responsibility for the information.

The reason is right there in the OP's link:

When Insider asked why the state has requested the health data of transgender college students, the state's deputy press secretary referred to DeSantis' second inaugural address, in which the governor stated: "We are committed to fully understanding the amount of public funding that is going toward such nonacademic pursuits to best assess how to get our colleges and universities refocused on education and truth."

So no more sports either, right?

Any visit to a college health center for any reason would fall under “nonacademic pursuits.” So would debate clubs, intramurals, acapella singing groups, gyms, and as PP mentioned, the NCAA in its entirety.

Any visits to a health clinic or a counseling center are technically not academic pursuits. The goal of their “truth” is targeted harassment.

I’m a Floridian, born and raised. Any true conservative would see the problem with his bans and government overreach.
