It’s a refreshingly different approach than the mainstream in this area, yes. We looked at it but decided not to apply. That said, the school puts out a great podcast, HeightsCast, that we enjoy.

Why did you decide not to apply, if you don’t mind sharing?

The focus on sports and limited foreign language options weren’t good fits for our son. We also had reservations about single-sex education from 3rd through high school - that’s a long time. (We would have been applying for 3rd; we’d probably be open to single-sex high school.) I really think it’s a great school for the right kid, just not ours.

Her child wasn't accepted to the Heights.

Not sure that happens.

The Heights is ultra-conservative. OP is obviously looking for that. Mater Dei is conservative but not ultra conservative.

Sorry, but no. DS is at another HS that gets a few students from both.

NP. They start with third grade, so presumably yes.

I would think middle school is pretty competitive to get into so not sure if 3rd is hardest

I wasn't saying 3rd is the hardest. It should be the exact opposite, because it's the first grade kids can apply for. Theoretically it should be wide open. Apparently not!

Was told third is the best shot for getting in because other grades much tighter bc such high retention.

I heard that as well - also that 3rd was nice for bonding with classmates. But I do know of a kid who entered in fifth snagged a spot and has been welcomed right in.

Are the Heights boys' parents over the top conservative? Ultra religious? Pious? -- compared to the Mater Dei parents?

The Heights is Opus Dei. If that's your thing.

Not everyone at The Heights is Opus Dei or ultra conservative for that matter. Listen to their podcasts and see if it interests you. If it does attend an open house.

This is the same poster that knows nothing about the school but will continually post, oooh but it’s Opus Dei! Like you even know what that is! Stop pretending you know anything about this school. So boring and ignorant. You are adding nothing to this conversation. You tear down bc you are afraid of differences. How open- minded and accepting of you!

Extremely so. Not even mainstream Roman Catholic in many respects.

Can you specify how they differ from mainstream Roman Catholicism?

PP from above- I don’t think they are more conservative that a typical Catholic parish- you will certainly find that crowd there but many parents simply wanted an all-boys and better academics than they found in their parish K-8.

As a crowd probably more practicing Catholic than the Mater Dei crowd but not what people here would have you believe.
