Her child wasn't accepted to the Heights

Sorry, but no. DS is at another HS that gets a few students from both.

Are the Heights boys' parents over the top conservative? Ultra religious? Pious? -- compared to the Mater Dei parents?

Yes. Super conservative

Extremely so. Not even mainstream Roman Catholic in many respects.

Can you specify how they differ from mainstream Roman Catholicism?

They go to Church weekly, they can do confession every day and my kids did confession 2x a week minimum mostly to get out of library.

They will talk about abortion to elementary school kids.
They don't think boys should date so no dances, none in middle school or high school. I think there is a "prom" (we left before that).
They tell the boys mastr.... tion is evil and wrong.
They teach that the bible says women are silent in church and something about being submissive.

I can't remember all the things that made me take pause but I was like "whatever" go to the White Party and St E's dances. I also told them that I disagree with many of the things they taught.

My son was told not to bring up rape during the abortion discussion because some kids were too young to understand that. LOL. Like, what?

But there are positives to conservatism. Like when there is a fight it's not big deal, no parents are called, they just work it out.

I’m so confused given you appear to be skeptical of their approach that you could not bring yourself to type the word masturbation.

At the Heights, the expectation is that the Heights Boys remain chaste until marriage.

"..Talking with other mothers, we shared a hope our sons would remain chaste until marriage,” Ms. Maher, a Heights mom, said. “I found it comforting to find other mothers who shared that ideal, and who felt it was possible here, that it was a hope that was supported here...”

This is Catholic Church doctrine. Shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Not at all. Agreed.

I don't understand people who send their kids to religous institutions and they have no idea what their kids are being taught.

Um well you can be catholic and pro life and also the same time think it's absurd to tell boys to be chaste until marriage.

Wow just wow.

Who in their right mind wants this for education?

Meanwhile some of these same parents are appauled at sex ed in public school. Amazing.

That you truly cannot fathom that people sincerely hold these views does not you a smarter or superior person.

I don’t know anybody who truly thinks it’s healthy to tell boys to not mast… bate.

How many practicing Catholics do you know?

Born and raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, sent my kids to the Heights, know Catholic doctors.

I know 2 people one Catholic and one extremist evangelicals who believe this.

So you evidently do know people who think it’s healthy…

I see lots of stuff in Catholic and even not Catholic social media world about the dangers of porn addiction and masturbation and I imagine the Heights is laying the ground for those kind of arguments — like this is not the rightly ordered way to express sexuality. I’m sure everyone ignores it but it seems fairly benign.

Yes I also know people who think JRK is alive and Biden is a body double.

Nobody said p0rn, mast…bating is a necessary and healthy part of life. Ask a urologist.

It’s wild to be in both worlds.

I believe my boys had an amazing experience at the Heights. Strong self worth, education, sports, outdoor education ,etc.

Every school has a few things you don’t like I just answered the question of the difference in the Heights vs say St E’s or BS or st Jane.

NP here. Until very recently, we have had no interactions with any families from the Heights. My daughter recently befriended a group of people she met in our church youth group, and I can't say how lovely these families are. The kids are wholesome and not obsessed with social media and the drama that comes along with that. They enjoy going to activities like sporting events, youth group meetings, and recently even started a book club. These kids are some of the most stable I know...and my daughter has friends from all walks of life -- athletes, theater kids, academic nerds. She is the combination of all three, but she really enjoys this group of kids the most because they are the kindest and least competitive friends she has.

Oh my goodness, how lovely. Sounds like the school (and of course parents) are doing something right! This is a big deal because so many of our teens and middle schoolers have mental health issues. I see it in the work that I do. Many are lost or zombies to their phones.

To be clear, your daughter is friends with the boys or girls from these Heights families? If the girls, they’re obviously not the ones who attend the school…

She is friends with both the boys and the siblings of the boys.

Your daughter sounds perfect. The group does too. Like a 1980s preppy group but in modern day times. Good on you!
