Skipping grades

He needs enrichment and acceleration, but also same-aged peers, because come adolescence, socio-emotional as well as physical development become incredibly important criteria to fit in and not feel left out (and in sports, some parents redshirt to give their kids a physical advantage!).

I take it your son was not picked for a CES spot? He can always try for a magnet middle school in 5th grade. In the meantime, he can do compacted math for 4th and 5th grade at his home school.

Reading he can do at home, and he should be allowed to bring books to school and read them.

There are MANY precocious kids in elementary, OP. My DD read The Hobbit and a few Harry Potters in first grade. She tested into Algebra 1 in 6th. She plays violin at an advanced level and writes stories for an online community in exchange for in-game currency. Find outside enrichment for your kid. Keep him in his age group, get him into the most advanced tracks, let him shine in extra-curriculars, and it will all serve him well come college admissions…

DC is coming from a private school so they did not taken any exams as yet. And my research says that they take the exam in the 3rd grade, and DC is going to the 2nd.

That's pretty typical for some kids in MCPS.

Typical for MANY students in our well educated area. Just make sure they always have a book with them, and if they get too bored, tell them to read.

You would need proof of this including passing testing given by MCPS teacher. When skipping, the other thing to consider is the social emotional which can be more challenging to deal with than the academics.

I agree with many PPs - for most kids it's not worth giving up a year of childhood and rushing into academics. Also, keep in mind that many times kids who are advanced in K-2 do not stay ahead after 3rd grade with the shift from learning to read to reading to learn and when math topics become more abstract. Many kids seem advanced at a young age because of the environment and advantages they have at home and that they started out at a faster pace, but then they plateau and other kids catch up.

However, if you are really interested and want to investigate, here is the official MCPS policy and grade advancement and acceleration.

I would just supplement as needed (consider AoPS for math and ELA) -- there is no way MCPS is going to let your kid skip a grade.

MCPS doesn’t like grade skipping. There are social issues also to consider. Some EC like sports are based on grade not age so child will be at a disadvantage if skips grade.

In MCPS being that much above grade level isn’t way outside the norm. Our DC was 6-7 grades above level. After years of ES struggling to meet their needs we were offered a grade skip from 3rd to 5th. Instead we sent child to CES because of social and EC concerns that would come with grade skip. It wasn’t perfect and maybe didn’t get maximum academic acceleration but there is more to consider than academics.

2 grades ahead reading is no big deal. Many can do that, and more.

I can give you a practical reason against doing this: when your child goes into high school, there are many programs (summer programs, internship, etc) with age requirements (16 yrs old, some requires 18 yrs old). At that point, it will feel very awkward to see all his classmates/friends going to programs that he cannot even apply to.

There IS skipping in MCPS - it is just rare

Agree. My child was reading at 5th grade level at age 4. Seriously! We did not skip but it took years for the other kids to catch up and he’s still very advanced but also very young.

My neighbor is a teacher in mcps. His kid started K on zoom because of Covid. Because his kid was way ahead already they let him move to 1st grade. Not sure if parent being a teacher was a factor or not. But I didn’t think it was allowed. He’s not within the the time frame for early entrance either. Birthday is in the spring.
