I have a question, my kid can read at the 5th-grade level and do math at the end of the 3rd-grade level. What is the possibility of getting MCPS to allow him to skip 2nd grade?
You would need proof of this including passing testing given by MCPS teacher. When skipping, the other thing to consider is the social emotional which can be more challenging to deal with than the academics.
I agree with many PPs - for most kids it's not worth giving up a year of childhood and rushing into academics. Also, keep in mind that many times kids who are advanced in K-2 do not stay ahead after 3rd grade with the shift from learning to read to reading to learn and when math topics become more abstract. Many kids seem advanced at a young age because of the environment and advantages they have at home and that they started out at a faster pace, but then they plateau and other kids catch up. However, if you are really interested and want to investigate, here is the official MCPS policy and grade advancement and acceleration. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jebra.pdf
