Pitt v Penn State?

The schools are so different, one Urban and one rural. You should visit with your child, and see which one they like.

This is not true.

My doughtier attended PSU. 8 years ago, PSU ranked 46 and its engineering school ranked 26.

University reputations follow the trends in student quality IMO. From our school's Naviance, the Pitt dotted lines are at 4.17/1370 for 2022 and Penn State's are at 3.98/1307. Same is already showing in US News Rankings that now have Pitt at #62 and Penn State at #77.

Penn State grad pp from above. Completely agree here.

Both so expensive. What a shame because normal middle class good students from Pa used to be able to go to these schools.

We’re comparing Toyota and Hyundai and you’re chiming in on Mercedes? Thanks for your insightful post.

I screwed up my own analogy…Toyota and Honda.

My dd is in at both and OOS. The difference for her is urban vs. not urban, she did love our visit to Pitt and really did have it high on her list but after thinking about where she’d feel more comfortable, PSU wins. We live in a DMV suburb and she says she doesn’t want city living yet. I guess I pushed her to apply to Pitt because of the quick decision and the opportunity to get in an automatic 5 year program. I thin it’s a great campus but I grew up in DC and rode the city bus and subway. That’s not her at all.

Both are on the higher end of our budget with no merit. So I think the urban issue might make the difference to many potential students.

Yeah, completely different experiences. For my suburban DMV kid the city was the draw.

OOS no brainer.

People who pay for Penn State OOS are idiots. Total waste of money. Why bother it's a large state school with football omg

Penn State and Pitt are equally popular at our school, with more than 20% of the senior class applying to each. Naviance averages:

Penn State 3.66/1150
Pitt 4.06/1281

Pitt is popular a safety for top-ranked kids, which probably accounts for the GPA discrepancy. I don’t think many of those kids are applying to Penn State. But it’s also true that most of those top-ranked kids don’t end up going to Pitt, so I don’t know what conclusions to draw….
