Drugs in High School

Anonymous
I'm the anonymous poster and actually I would report using my own name.
Our school has anti-drug talks.

Also, i know two of two area kids who died of drug overdoses last year (one upper NW, one Bethesda). There were probably more. Kids from families like yours and mine. I don't know what their parents knew or didn't know. However, I could totally see my son slipping this by me. I know what he tells me but I can't say anything for certain. None of us can.

On the flip side, it feels to me like kids aren’t even drinking. Before anyone accuses me of being naive, there has been a lot written about how this generation is risk averse (not driving, not drinking, not having sex). My kid has skipped every dance after party throughout HS because they make her uncomfortable. Of course, I am fully supportive of removing herself from bad situations, I also want her to learn to say no in a smaller environment bc removing oneself isn’t always an option.

I am sure there are kids using drugs at my children’s high school but there are also groups who are abstaining from everything.

Of course I’ve heard about drugs in high school. In fact a friend told me her daughter has routinely smelled weed in the bathrooms at AHC, but I guess I’m still stunned. Id never expect this sort of activity INSIDE THE SCHOOL. I’m thinking why am I paying private school tuition for this? (Please save the comments about the value of private school). DC told me the admin isn’t allowed into student bathrooms so no way the kids can get caught. And they go to class high but use colored contacts to disguise their eyes. Of course this is a specific group. Is this common in small area privates? DC went to a private middle school and there weren’t any drugs or smoking or vaping—nothing. Wondering what to do (of course DC swore me to secrecy).

Lol are you an adult or your kids best friend? Go complain to the school and demand action!

It private school. They most likely read the NYT article on the health problems with alcohol.

What school is this? At my child’s big 3 school the teachers are allowed in the bathrooms and they’re in there frequently and often so I know this is not their school. Also you can tell when someone is high kids talk and teachers talk and they would be expelled at our school. Where is the school located? Cocaine? That’s alarming. I’m not sure what to tell you to do. I’m sorry.

Sidwell has a "vaping shed" in the shed by the soccer field. All the kids know about it, school does nothing as far as we can tell

You will be helping those kids and others who may experiment as a result of them.

That’s not really a thing. You can’t report things like that anonymously and expect anything to be done. You can ask that your identity be kept anonymous but the school is not going to confront its students on something so serious based on an email from a burner account.

Not true. Schools aren't going to suspend a kid over an anonymous tip but they will definitely investigate.

I find it hard to believe that a private school would an investigate an anonymous tip when the tip could be totally made up. Kids would be sending in anonymous tips about their non-offending “enemies” all the time if this were true. I would have a real problem with a school where I’m paying tuition asking my kid if they did drugs in the bathroom based on on email from a burner account.

Have you or your kid reported it? Does the school know about it?

Let others do what they will you don't need to engage. Recognize the consequences a stay away.

I think it was more likely they were snorting somebody's Adderrall rather than cocaine.

I guess I’m naive but where do teenagers even get access to hard drugs like cocaine?

No so it anonymously if you must. The consequences for your kid will be terrible.

Hmm, yes, where indeed do rich kids with access to the world via their smartphones manage to find common things?

A headscratcher for sure.

I’m not a high school parent yet, but I would want to report anonymously. It seems like well connected parents on committees and boards and PTAs always find out, and then their kids do.

Report the drug use to school. Or don’t. Up to you. But yes, you are naive if you thought being in private school somehow provided you some safe haven away from drugs. Drugs are not a public school or low socioeconomic thing and never have been. Welcome to the real world for you and your kid.
