s/o on other thread...things you probably spend too much money on but think it's worth it

Overseas traveler here: I also bought a new and not a used car because I wanted to do it fast and avoid any potential issues. I am planning to drive it for 10-20 years though

I shop at thrift stores for my clothing and can’t pass up a good bargain. But I have no problem spending $115 for a haircut downtown.

Private sports lessons for kids. I never thought I’d do that but it helps DD manage the anxiety and depression that she’s been struggling with since…well, forever.

Hello fresh. I used to cook soooo frugally but now the demands on my executive function capacity are higher so hello fresh makes total sense for me now.

The highest quality paint. From Sherwin Williams, not Farrow and Ball.

I do all this, but never thought I was splurging. 😬

(BTW this wasn’t meant as snark. I really didn’t know. We are solidly middle class)

Gel manicures. Pretty nails make me foolishly happy.

Nice VRBOs when we travel - we have three kids and want to be comfortable.

Fresh flowers, weekly.

Whenever I order from Wegmans on Instacart - I know I’m paying too much, but get slightly giddy from all the options.

Well hey now you can feel all fancy the next time you pay for these things!

(But you really don’t think that private sports lessons are a splurge? We spend 1K a month on figure skating lessons)

Art.

I don’t even spend that much, but it serves no purpose other than to make me happy.

Cheap on most everything else.

This thread is making me much happier than the one it's in response to.

I spend a lot on my shoes - not like Jimmy Choos, but I have been wearing Swedish clogs since I was a teenager (so, 30 years now) and they make my back and feet feel great, and they cost an absolute fortune.

I buy most of my clothes used off eBay and Poshmark. But these clogs - these clogs.

Also we never bargain shop for groceries. We get the expensive pasture-raised milk and eggs, the organic strawberries, all the spendy things.

But we drive an 11-year-old Kia Soul and - whatever. We spend a lot on groceries and clogs!

Starbucks Coffee on my work days. I am not Rich snd moztcof my kids clothes come from the thrift store. I can get nice quality barely used name brands for a few dollars. But I enjoy my frap in the afternoons 2-3 times a week. It brings me joy.

I spend too much money on my lounge/workout clothes. I work from home.

I also spend too much on conveniences like Instacart.

Clothes and shoes - I rarely buy but when I do I spend $$$ on quality things that will last me 10, 20 years or longer.

Doctor - I go to an expensive internist who doesn't take insurance. Upside is I never wait for an appointment and the doctor takes their time to be thorough.

Hotels on vacation - I'll splurge.

I'm really frugal in other areas to the point where family members joke about it. Reusing ziplocs, anyone?

Reusing Ziploc bags but voluntarily paying out of pocket for all medical services is objectively dumb.

Eh I’ll do that too if they’re not dirty. But I’m not going to wash them.

I have an almost potty trained 4 yo and when he has a bad poo accident I put it in a zip lock and toss it. So wasteful, but I'm not cleaning that $h!+

Ingredients. Especially seafood, which I eat 4-5x a week, and caviar several times a year.

Travel frequency. My family lives on the west coast, my husband has family in NYC, and we try to take at least two "enriching" trips a year to places relevant to my kids' academic interests.

Academic and sports interests. This includes camps, sports lessons, Mathnasium. My parents wouldn't pay for this stuff and it brings me so much joy to indulge my kids in the things they really care about.

Private school. DH was the product of "pressure cooker" NOVA schools and insists. I'm more ambivalent.
