Tutoring rates

I’m working on getting comfortable enough to tutor AP stats—there is a severe shortage of people willing/able to tutor that class, and I think I could get $120 once I’m up to speed.
Regarding AP STATS: Over on the College chat board there are a bunch of parents that said there kids said AP Stats was “easy enough” , no tutor needed. That board isn’t just FCPS, It’s all of Metro DC. On this FCPS board, there is a thread that has parents and teachers describe how Brutal AP STATS is. So what does this mean? Is it just certain kids have a harder time with it, or is it just completely different between districts and it’s “hard” in FCPS?

AP Stats teacher. AP Stats is the only AP math class that doesn't have a gatekeeper class so you get a lot of students who think that it's a good class if you haven't done that great in math so far but still want to take an AP Math class to impress colleges (bad idea). I have students who have only had Algebra II and students who are taking multivariable in the same class. Students who had a C- or below in Precalc or who took Trig/Discrete the year before. Even some of the kids in multivariable may have some difficulty with the class if they're not that great writers.
Some ambitious students even decide to load up on a Calculus track class, AP Stats and sometimes even a coding class at the same time and get overwhelmed, unless they were stellar students to begin with.
That's why some students find it easy and others really struggle.

I’ve used Wyzant (and word of mouth) to find tutors and have been paying between $60-100/ hour, usually for online meetings.

Why would you think you could charge $120 an hour as someone who needs to get up to speed and would be new to tutoring (at least tutoring AP Stats)?

I’m a tutor and my rates are all over the place. ES and MS are lower than HS credit classes. For lower level classes, I charge around $50 unless the commute is more than 15 minutes one-way, than $60. HS classes are also closer to $60-65, depending on if it’s AP or not. Also, I commonly shave off $5, if the family will go virtual. With all that in mind, my husband says my rates are too low.

We pay $20 - $50 for online.

Online tutoring typically has a much bigger discount than $5. Parents look on Wyzant, Outschool etc. there ar dozens of tutors that charge very low rates. Don’t focus on the expensive tutors with dozens of perfect reviews, but look for the hidden gems. It takes some work upfront, but you can find someone great who lives in a low cost area for a very affordable price.

My HS DD has a French tutor in Idaho who is amazing and only charges $20 an hour. The AP Biology tutor is a teacher lives somewhere Texas and charges $50 and is probably one of the most gifted teachers my child has encountered.

Babysitters get 15 - 20 hourly. I can't believe you'd only pay a college educated tutor 20/hour.

Babysitters in the DMV get $15-20 per hour.

Online the market is nationwide, including very low cost of living areas.

Wyzant has hidden gems....you have to look closely.

Np but I also just started searching wyzant from a recommendation from a neighbor mom but am not finding good ones so far (most that have had a couple of lessons with my kids seem inexperienced college students or else charge a lot if they are former educators)
What are some tips in finding good quality tutors at a reasonable price on this platform? Any tips would be appreciated!

Tip: You get what you pay for.

Why would you think they can’t? They “can charge” whatever a few people (wouldn’t need many at that rate) are willing to pay for a high level, in demand subject with few available tutors.
