Spring break

Last year spring break did not align with Easter and we were able to fly to a lovely beach resort for the week. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening this year. Need some suggestions.

We'll be visiting Colleges during Spring Break as Colleges have their breaks earlier.

Priorities change as the kids get older!

I drove my kids down to Orlando - we did the space center/beach and Orlando area stuff.

Um, yes. This is why you book spring break in advance.

What else did you expect 3 months out from peak travel season?

Not everyone knows their work schedule more than 3 months in advance. Lucky you.

Skiing out west. Flights were ridiculously expensive. Fortunately I booked lodging so long ago that I got a really good deal on that.

Uruguay. Long flights for a week, but that is the time we have.

CO. Went same week last year; Lots of snow and great conditions.

Agreed that airfare is very expensive! We booked an airbnb with family which ended up being fairly affordable on Gulf Coast of Florida, but the airfare was almost $2000 for a family of four! More than we expected, but we'd committed to the trip.

I would be totally fine with spring break being separated from Easter if several school districts around us followed suit. But having different spring breaks is hard on teachers and other working families.

Lol. Had nothing to do with the holiday. It was that they had breaks separate from other area counties, so many teachers had to burn all their leave to care for the children who were on a different break.

+ us. I teach in a different district so I took time off to take a trip just like you all take time off work when you vacation with your kids on spring break. The difference is that we have to get subs and parents get upset when their child's teacher isn't there.

IMHO, there should just be a NOVA unified calendar that is set 2-3 years out.

It was admin and Gatehouse who didn’t fully realize the consequences of going a different week.

Admin and Gatehouse don’t make the calendar. The board created the calendar. Months before the break, principals surveyed staff to see which teachers would be impacted. Staff from central office were pulled in to help cover.

Same! I hate having it tied to Easter, especially the years when Easter is really late/mid April. I also understand that FCPS can't go rogue though as last year had a huge impact on staff who's children are in different counties.

That’s nice for you, but those of us with kids in sports only have the option to travel at spring break.

I’m not sure why the expense of your spring break is the county’s problem. It isn’t. If you can’t afford to travel, you can stay home.
