Ellen ruthlessly bullying Taylor Swift

She wrote a song about it… “every time I go on Ellen” pretty catchy.

She was on Ellen a lot. I wonder why she keep agreeing to go on.

It is easy to not remember today but back then she was not the powerful juggarnaut that she is today and Ellen was just a part of the circuit. The Biebs was on there time and time again too.

I found this clip to be worse than I was expecting clicking into it, she is clearly articulating why it is gross and that she does not want to do it.

This is not a defense of Ellen, who I don't really like, but I think some folks are missing key context.

Ellen because a daytime talk show host during this era when more female comedians were becoming high profile but there were fewer career opportunities for them because of sexism in both the stand-up world and in Hollywood. Ellen was a very successful standup, and then had a somewhat successful sitcom (not wildly successful, but not insta-cancelled). Women did not get considered for late night gigs, which was one path for someone like that. So Ellen (and Rosie O'Donell before her) were given daytime talk shows.

Stand-up comedy, especially back in the 90s when Ellen came up, can be incredibly mean. Think about how mean Seinfeld was, how mean Letterman could be. Translating that environment to a daytime talk show is actually pretty weird, and reflects the built in misogyny in this choice -- "Oh a funny woman -- normally we put funny people on at night to entertain adults, but this is a woman so we'll put her on at 3pm to entertain board housewives!" It reflects a lack of respect both for the performer AND for the audience for daytime television.

Comparing Ellen to Kelly Clarkson is weird because Kelly Clarkson got hired for the job because she has a likable, folksy persona that people seem to like, plus she has a long history on TV dating back to American Idol, so she's very familiar. Ellen was a very different deal, coming from a much harsher environment, and what people knew about her was that she had a mildly funny sitcom (very mildly) and was gay. The Ellen backlash was inevitable because she was never well suited to that environment. I honestly thing her show did as well as it did for no other reason that people really got into the dance segments at the beginning of each show, and daytime viewers tend to be very loyal -- once they make a show part of a routine, it sticks. That's less true now, though, with streaming.

Here's why, and I don't know how I know this: when you're doing promo, you do ONE morning show like Kelly & Ryan, one afternoon show and one late night show. Someone on her team must have picked Ellen, and then she was stuck with Ellen. She'd have had to have thrown a big stink to switch from Ellen to ... whoever else was an option.

The whole thing was awful. Ellen was harassing her and it wasn't funny. At the same time, her reaction to it was a bit odd - there is no reason to say it negates everything she stands for - just say you don't want to do it and don't intend to.

The ugly duckling creepy boomer host was basically bullying her live on air, reducing her to a dumb (typical Hollywood) prostitute who sleeps with dozens of men for pop song content. Taylor takes her song writing serious and doesn’t seem to actually be linked to that many boys. Ellen was mean and vicious and clearly secretly hated (envied?) a lot of the attractive celebs who came on. She got off on tormenting them under the guise of “humor”. Power drunk cruel a-hole.

Ellen wasn’t ever funny. Take away the laugh track and bribed crowd and sycophantic fake laughing guests and nobody is genuinely laughing.

Oh geez... please go back to whining about how you hate ticketmaster and couldn't get Taylor Swift tickets.

Ellen's humor often made uncomfortable with its edge of meanness when I'd see it, which usually just when my teen texted me video clip.

Ellen was cancelled for being gay and disappeared for a while. Did we forget this? You can see her get a bit emotional about the topic for a very brief moment when David Letterman has Ellen in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Dave can’t seem to imagine why she disappeared and she is incredulous that he doesn’t understand.

Flash forward. Taylor disappeared due to Kanye.

You have two powerful women who are grown ups who can make choices. I’m not going to feel bad for Taylor here. This convo could have been planned like Ellen and Michelle Obama at CVS and Costco.

Taylor is quiet about her relationship now, and I don’t see rumors flying anymore. In the old days, she was getting photographed walking around. Ew York or having coffee with an actor. Or having pool parties with lots of models. You can choose to attract attention or not.

Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster are examples of two highly successful people who made decisions that help them avoid the limelight. A lot of this is a choice by a celebrity and their PR team.

This was worse than I expected. It was really gross.
No one here can see how inappropriate it was for Ellen to continue pushing after she clearly said she didn’t want to do it? Remember, she was 23 at the time. Still “new” in the industry and very much wanting to not upset anyone with more power than her. I do feel badly for any 23 year treated this way, regardless of their celebrity status.

She’s disturbed and evil. Why she ever became THE it tv show host is beyond me. Doesn’t seem natural.
