Who is a true moderate Republican anymore? And why would the Democrats vote for ANY R? Outside of they can't get paid (I don't think) until they actually take their seats, and some of them might get tired of that.

Congress is still getting paid. Its the staffers that won't get paid.

Why would the D's do it? Because a truly moderate R speaker is a far better option than McCarthy or someone to the right of him. There is no chance of having a D speaker, so why wouldn't they vote for a moderate? I agree there are not many left, and the R's are unlikely to do it anyway.

But the beauty of it is that the moderate candidate doesn't need to be a sitting member. They actually could nominate someone like Liz Cheney, who has plenty of true conservative cred but has also proven herself capable of putting country over party loyalty. There actually are plenty of moderates in the country, if you look beyond those who could survive a Republican party primary.

Why are Democrats expected to vote for a moderate R but Republicans aren’t expected to vote for any Democrat. Not even a moderate one?

Unfortunately that’s a consequence of the Rs having a majority… however slim.
