McCarthy Vote For Dummies

Can some of you DC smarties break down why this is such a circus? Why is he rejected by his own party over and over again?

The 20 or so Ultra MAGAs are holding their own party hostage. They don't want McCarthy, because he's not as likely to want to blow up the government as they are, despite him offering the sun, the moon, the stars, his first born, etc. McCarthy wants the gavel and is unwilling to concede the position. You've got stalemate.

And even though they've said quite frankly that they'll never vote for him, they still have demands, and he keeps caving and giving them more stuff. So both groups are willing to burn down the house to get what they want, even though they both seem to understand that the other is never going to actually do what the other wants (McCarthy withdraw/chaos caucus vote for him). It's embarrassing.

The Rs thought more Rs would be elected but the expected "red wave" turned out to be a " pink trickle". McCarthy did not think he would need the ultra crazy votes, but he does.

He has had more than a whole month to hash all this out. I don't know why they're expecting that the dysfunctional family is going to come together and sing Kumbaya all of a sudden.

Also I could be wrong but the concessions he has made — we are stuck with them no matter who is speaker.

But picture Lucy pulling the ball away from Charlie Brown over and over. That’s where we are.

I mean, nothing is official just because he agrees to it, but they know they can break the government if they say no until they get what they want, so they can keep doing this until the person nominated agrees to what they demand. This is why we shouldn't negotiate with terrorists.

Hopefully at some point the 200 less insane Rs will realize they’re better off putting forward a moderate candidate that DS can get behind. Then they’d be negotiating with people who have a vested interest in making the country work.

They could nominate a true moderate, and that would get a bunch of D's to vote for their nominee, thus breaking the statemate. But they won't do that.

Who is a true moderate Republican anymore? And why would the Democrats vote for ANY R? Outside of they can't get paid (I don't think) until they actually take their seats, and some of them might get tired of that.

Congress is still getting paid. Its the staffers that won't get paid.

Why would the D's do it? Because a truly moderate R speaker is a far better option than McCarthy or someone to the right of him. There is no chance of having a D speaker, so why wouldn't they vote for a moderate? I agree there are not many left, and the R's are unlikely to do it anyway.

But the beauty of it is that the moderate candidate doesn't need to be a sitting member. They actually could nominate someone like Liz Cheney, who has plenty of true conservative cred but has also proven herself capable of putting country over party loyalty. There actually are plenty of moderates in the country, if you look beyond those who could survive a Republican party primary.

Dems would never nominate Liz Cheney. Never.

Fine she did good on J6 but she is still evil and the daughter of a war criminal.

Aaaaannnndddd back to reality. This is the GOP dysfunction that has always existed but the media has convinced everyone it’s BOTH SIDES. Heck, Andrea Mitchell is still trying to tell Dems they need to fix this mess (because everyone knows Dems always have to be the grownups and wipe GOP feces off the walls). Next time you hear media & pundits claim “washington is broken” call them out. No, Washington isn’t broken. but the GOP are sure trying hard to break it.

Why are Democrats expected to vote for a moderate R but Republicans aren’t expected to vote for any Democrat. Not even a moderate one?
