My big problems are that the level of “good/useful” stuff in my cabinets and closets is exceeding the available space, so all of my systems are breaking down and stuff isn't getting put away.

My other big problem is toys! I have so many bits and pieces and my kids play with all of them, but there’s too much.

Argggg. It’s so frustrating. It’s the slow creep that gets me. Everything is fine and working well and then suddenly…it’s not.

If you no longer have room, discard it. Nobody wants your used and broken stuff.

I agree you don’t donate broken items, but who is donating only new things?

I have tons of new things, especially clothes and toys, but have had trouble donating even those. No one wants anything it seems.

I am doing better with my own stuff and household stuff, but toys are killing me. My 10 year old plays with every type of doll, from one inch high to Chelsea, Barbie, Rainbow High, Am. Girl type, and stuffed animals. They all live in each other worlds -- they are intermarried, some are children of others, they all have pets, everyone under 18 inches shares clothes, they drive each other's cars, the Blum dolls live in the barbie dream house, she has built lego houses for the hatchimals. Every time I try to purge, I am a monster breaking up families. Also, my MIL shows her love by giving gifts, so there is no end in site.

I try to remind myself that I am glad she is imaginative and plays, unlike her 14 year old brother who has been glued to a playstation for 5 years. And I also sneak broken/forgotten stuff out when she isn't looking.

You’ve taken brand new clothes and toys to the Salvation Army and they refused your donation?

The one in Annandale just took multiple bags of (not new) clothing from me so maybe try that one.

With you all purging I might need to make a trip to the thrift shop. Lol. I’ve done some purging this week but will do more on Monday when my kid has school. It helps me yo take straight to thrift that day so it’s gone. Or give away on buy nothing. I’ve put snow gear on but nothing today and there was a huge interest. It’ll be on the porch and gone tomorrow morning.

Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K. White helped me a lot. I listened on audiobook while I worked on the house. Or listen to any good audiobook or podcast as a treat to yourself as you work.

Get rid of your prime membership. I've saved so much money and realize I don't actually "need" those items, nor do I need them to arrive in 2 days.

Omg I would die, I need all the items.

+1. I use Amazon so much I can never get rid of it.

Don’t come back on DCUM until you’ve gone through all of your socks and thrown away any old, ripped, stained, unmatched socks. Throw away anything that aren’t comfortable or you never wear.

Small, easy project to get started.

You win dcum today. I’ll adopt this next Christmas.

I basically buy everything from amazon. Almost all our clothes, all our household stuff (detergent, paper towels, etc), toys, almost everything that I’d otherwise get at a hardware store, almost everything I used to get at CVS, etc. I don’t go to any stores that aren’t Whole Foods except maybe once a month. I hate running errands, I hate going in stores, I hate browsing. I love Amazon.

Ok.

How about…workout clothes? Shoes?

Start small to get the ball rolling.

Yes! Time to purge. I’m in a FB group that encourages getting rid of 2023 items in 2023. Minimalism Yearly Challenge.
