Anyone else gearing up for a post holiday purge?

My big problems are that the level of “good/useful” stuff in my cabinets and closets is exceeding the available space, so all of my systems are breaking down and stuff isn't getting put away.

My other big problem is toys! I have so many bits and pieces and my kids play with all of them, but there’s too much.

Argggg. It’s so frustrating. It’s the slow creep that gets me. Everything is fine and working well and then suddenly…it’s not.

Yes to the first sentence! To do it right, it helps when someone will take the donations /trash bags away immediately! otherwise they will linger in your hallway and trunk (ask me how I know). you might even re-think some donations.

I need to do a major toy donation. Will wait until kids are in school again.

I am doing this right now with clothes. I have a lot of clothes that are too big and my clothes have a lot of clothes that are too small. As soon as I finish breakfast, I am getting everything sorted into donation piles.

I always do the purge with my kids before Christmas because *we have to make room for the new toys*. Works fabulously every time. Get rid of the old stuff so we have lots of room to play with, enjoy and keep our new things.

And remember to cut down on purchases

Yes! Since October Ive donated 8 bags of winter clothing, household goods, and old blankets and towels. Next on the list will be spring clothing and toys.

If you no longer have room, discard it. Nobody wants your used and broken stuff.

Get rid of your prime membership. I've saved so much money and realize I don't actually "need" those items, nor do I need them to arrive in 2 days.

I just dropped off 10 bags of clothes for donation yesterday. Felt good to get rid of things rarely being worn. Still have so much more to do though…

I take it that you aren’t familiar with your local Buy Nothing group.

I agree you don’t donate broken items, but who is donating only new things?

Yesterday someone put worn-in, (toes imprinted) dirty Birkenstocks, didn't even know the size (she said 8 or 9 I think??) and people jumped all over it! But I see a lot of nice stuff, that's just an example of how much people are interested in used stuff.
