Do you think it’s worth it to spend on “if you know you know” handbags over $1-2k?

LOL. Buy whatever you want. If you think DCUM recommends ugly crap, why bother reading these types of posts. Are you seeking validation or something?

I prefer quality and function over looks and brand names.

Because OP is looking for help and I am warning here she won’t get it here. Go ahead and recommend another tote bag with unfinished edges though. I can’t stop you.

This statement is gross, although not surprising. If you wear a certain bag based on your social circle and which private school your kid attends, you live a very empty, vapid life.

Weird question. I dislike fashion as status symbol. Comes off as insecure and immature.

It’s the correct response to the OP’s question though. She asked a question about “only if you know” bags and PP responded with who would know/if you care.

eh.. you stated that dcum "recommend ugly unfashionable crap"... "fashionable" is subjective. Maybe your bag choices get dumped on here because many think your choices are crap.

IMO, you seem to be looking for validation yourself.

If you love them, sure. If you’re hoping it conveys status no because one thing about people who don’t care about bags is we will never ever notice the bag. So you’re not going to impress anyone but again- if you love it and that’s why you want it and it’s not a hardship, get that bag!

I prefer Mulberry (all my bags are Mulberry, Smythson, Il Bisonte, or no visible label high end), would not be caught dead with Dior, LV, YSL, Gucci, Prada (which is made in China FYI). I also like if-you-know more medium brands like Mage, Strathberry, Welden.

I love your taste! I also like Mulberry and Smythson but they are outside of my budget--will be looking into Mage and Strathberry.

okay, fair point.

+1 personally, I think people who buy flashy items are try hards.

Anonymous wrote:It's only worth it if you love the bag. I fell in love with Mulberry nearly 15 years ago, before they had as large of a presence and recognizability in the US. I carried my Mulberries and loved them. Still do. They were/are worth the money to me because I love the craftsmanship. They were also "worth it" in the sense that because of the great materials and craftsmanship, they've lasted way longer than any fast fashion bag would have. I carry my bags for me, not so they can be recognized by some stranger.

Exactly this. I have a Bottega bag from ages ago that is instantly recognizable to people who know the brand (and people will know I spent $$$ on it) but to be honest I don't even like it when people recognize the bag or are knowing about it's cost. It was a splurge purchase after a small financial windfall and it's a classic bag that I've carried for work and travel for over a decade. It's value to me is in the extremely high quality of the bag and how inherently beautiful it is. It's the nicest leather good I've ever owned and I could easily sell it today for close to what I paid back then. There are so few things you can own these days that have that kind of quality and craftsmanship -- I've spent tons more money on personal electronics that have broken or become obsolete in just a few years in the time I've owned this one very useful leather bag.

Oh, also, in recent years I've had a few people ask me if the bag is Clare V., which is a really cute bag brand that sells at a much lower price point. What's funny is that they are disappointed to here it's not because Clare V. is definitely a "cool girl" brand (not a criticism, I like their bags) whereas when I say it's Bottega I either get a blank look because most people don't care about the brand, or the person has heard of it but associates it with rich old ladies (which I am not). So if anything, from a brand perspective, I'd probably be better off with a Clare V. bag! But I love my bag and it's served me well. It's really not about the brand to me.

I think people look like idiots with overpriced designer handbags. I prefer custom leather handbags, made to order, made to last.

OP is struggling with low self esteem and low budget - a handbag will apparently cure one and harm the other.

Why do other people need to recognize my handbag? I don’t understand.

Not the parenthetical remark (which is made in China FYI) about Prada.

Almost all high end handbags are made in Northern Italy by Chinese workers in Chinese owned factories.

CORRECTION: Should read "Note the parenthetical remark".
