Doesn’t matter what your mind says if you want to follow the law. |
Yes, MUST!! Glad some people here are thoughtful enough to give their caregivers cash bonus. There’s no need to run it through payroll as the nanny would get taxed and it wouldn’t really be a ‘bonus’ |
Nannies aren't allowed to receive gifts? |
It is NOT tax evasion. You give your nanny a check or cash w/o taxing her. What kind of person are you to tax the ‘bonus’ ?!!! Common sense is something that some folks don’t have. |
+1 |
What kind of person am I? Someone who follows the law. Jesus lady. My husband could be disbarred for giving a cash bonus. |
No, they're not unless the gifts are taxed. This isn't some sort of gotcha. There's literally a law. |
The post tax amount is still a bonus. |
Sheesh no kidding!!! It is the law that this is taxable. Even if it’s a gift. And any gift >$100 including gift cards and physical objects are also taxable. https://www.homeworksolutions.com/knowledge-center/is-a-nanny-bonus-reported-as-wages/ We always just accounted for the tax bite when we gave our nanny a bonus and increased the amount accordingly so she ended up getting what she would’ve gotten had we just given her cash. My husband has security clearance and I could potentially work a job in the future that requires clearance. Plus we want to do things on the up and up anyways. Reason with yourself all you want that paying it cash or check to avoid taxes is fine. But again. It’s illegal even if you call it a gift. |
Attorney’s wife here and give a well deserved bonus (personal check) to our wonderful Nanny. The fact that you’re taxing your employee/caregiver is absolutely ridiculous. Check with your financial advisor and your accountant that giving bonus in form of cash/check it’s totally fine. Perhaps, go to ATM/teller and withdraw cash? That ain’t taxable!!! |
Have you thought about asking your nanny how would she like her bonus to be paid? We asked her the pst 3 years and she greatly appreciates cash. This isn’t an issue for us(husband has clearance), we just get money from the bank and give it in an envelope along with Nordstrom gift card. |
It is not totally fine. What utter garbage. It is illegal. It is tax evasion. Are you likely to get caught? Probably not. But this is false false false, and any accountant or advisor or attorney telling you this is opening themself up for liability. |
Lady I'm not taxing her. The federal government is taxing her. Glad your husband plays fast and loose with the law though. |
The terrified folks that hate giving bonuses….do yourself a favor: give your nanny cash! She hates taxes as much as you do. Fooling yourself is epic. Don’t you get it that your nanny could lose her health insurance if she goes over bracket?! Kindly advise to do your research and soul searching as well as asking your caregiver how would she like her bonus to be paid. Unless you’re gifting her 5k(doubtful as you sound cheap already) then it goes through payroll. Real and good people don’t tax bonuses to the person that cares for their biggest treasures. You’re welcome! |
Duh, FG taxes-of course! Glad some people are capable to think through it and make their effort to get their Nannies cash. |
