Do you give bonus in cash/check or though your payroll software?

Must?

Yeah…I hope this person is joking. Cash and check to avoid having taxes taken out is literally tax evasion, is illegal, and hopefully you and the nanny don’t get caught because what a headache. If you are paying wages through a payroll system to be on the up and up why would you avoid this at Christmas?? Put another way, how would you feel if your employer paid you a bonus under the table?

It is NOT tax evasion. You give your nanny a check or cash w/o taxing her. What kind of person are you to tax the ‘bonus’ ?!!! Common sense is something that some folks don’t have.

What kind of person am I? Someone who follows the law. Jesus lady. My husband could be disbarred for giving a cash bonus.

Attorney’s wife here and give a well deserved bonus (personal check) to our wonderful Nanny. The fact that you’re taxing your employee/caregiver is absolutely ridiculous. Check with your financial advisor and your accountant that giving bonus in form of cash/check it’s totally fine.
Perhaps, go to ATM/teller and withdraw cash? That ain’t taxable!!!

It is not totally fine. What utter garbage. It is illegal. It is tax evasion. Are you likely to get caught? Probably not. But this is false false false, and any accountant or advisor or attorney telling you this is opening themself up for liability.

We’re totally okay and flexible giving bonuses whichever ways nanny preferences. The two nannies we had always appreciated cash. Same goes for housekeeper. It’s absolutely up to employer&employee.

Nanny here- I’ve always gotten bonuses in check, not via payroll as it defeats the gift purposes. Thankful that I have always gotten significant sum-of money at end of year. Id like to share that my salary of 52 weeks is compensated via payroll. Any OT and health stipend is paid cash.or check. Same with bonus, personal check. For reference: both parents are attorneys, we agreed to this since the very beginning.

Not garbage whatsoever. You want to gift your employee just simply ask what works best for he/she and go from there.
(Know it all people, use your common sense.)

Lady I'm not taxing her. The federal government is taxing her. Glad your husband plays fast and loose with the law though.

Duh, FG taxes-of course! Glad some people are capable to think through it and make their effort to get their Nannies cash.

Giving the bonus in cash is tax evasion, for you and for her. Tax evasion is a felony. Will you get caught? Probably not, but it's still against the law. It has nothing to do with"effort".

The terrified folks that hate giving bonuses….do yourself a favor: give your nanny cash! She hates taxes as much as you do. Fooling yourself is epic.
Don’t you get it that your nanny could lose her health insurance if she goes over bracket?! Kindly advise to do your research and soul searching as well as asking your caregiver how would she like her bonus to be paid. Unless you’re gifting her 5k(doubtful as you sound cheap already) then it goes through payroll.
Real and good people don’t tax bonuses to the person that cares for their biggest treasures.

You’re welcome!

1. Real and good people follow the law
2. I already pay for my nanny's health insurance because I'm not cheap

I don't expect my employer to break the law when paying me. That's fair to the rest of my citizens.

+1. Our neighbor was a lawyer in a compliance function and she paid her household help off the books. But I know this because the household help talk to the neighbors and the friends of the family and one day you tax evaders run the risk of getting yourself into trouble.

Past 7 years we’ve given bonus via personal check; no tax evasion. Do you tax your housekeeping crew, cleaners, nail tech and Botox aesthetician? If you’re that strict in your own head, can’t you get money from the bank or is that a big deal for you? Unless you’re given your employee more than 5k then by all means, run it through payroll company.

Interesting “know it all” folks here.

Asking your caregiver would be a wise answer. Once we had a nanny that kindly asked not to do bonus b/c if she declared more money she and her son would lose their healthcare(she was under Obamacare.) After doing some research and asking the accountant the advice was to gift our household employees with either cash bonus/personal check as long as the bonus is a once a year thing. When we wrote her a check she was so thankful.

I’m not the employer of all the people you list, save for maybe the housekeeping crew, however we pay them less than whatever the yearly threshold is to consider them a household employee. A nanny is a household employee. You have to tax their bonus technically. Many don’t. It is the law though.
