Are you an ES teacher? In MS and HS, students complete most work in GSuite so there’s notifications about comments and other file activity that comes to .net. |
I teach in a MS. Everything is posted and graded in Canvas, then synced to Synergy every week or so. If a student sends me a message through Canvas or Synergy it’s forwarded to my .org. I reply through Synergy because I have to log it in a variety of communication logs. My admin requires 2 way communication with parents for certain things. Any google files I need to share are done in Canvas. Either linked in the assignment or uploaded to the files section. This also makes it easier for parents to help their kids are home complete any missing work. |
I always tell my kids to send to both. |
|
Haha!
IF MCPS goal is to FACILITATE communication between parents and teachers, there would be one email address to contact teachers, instead of AT LEAST 4 different systems (.org, .net, Synergy, Canvas, and i think several other) But if the idea is to THWART such communication, why then you'd have multiple methods, none required, some never checked, some the teacher doesn't even know exists! Oh, which method does MCPS use? Oh..... |
Everyone has a preference that matches how they work. Canvas only sends automatic notifications for comments, late work, submission, or resubmission. It doesn’t notify you of so many things that otherwise happen in GSuite. For example, that a student requested access to a file. We do a lot of collaborative work. Students forget to share with everyone in their group. Or a student made a comment in the Doc or Slide itself. Canvas Speedgrader doesn’t show those at all. And you can’t share Google Files to parents within Canvas itself. I do it all the time through gmail. It does what I need and is easier to manage on my phone when I’m away from my school desk. I’ve asked parents to contact me through .net. I check the other 3-4 methods a couple times a week max. For parents, the best bet is to ask each teacher. |
Ooh! Burn! MCPS uses multiple systems. Their emails don't always play nicely. But you go ahead and ascribe the worst of intentions. 'Cause you gotta do you. |
|
The reason there are multiples is due to the number of platforms they use. Office 365 is used solely for email despite the great uses for One Drive, teams, sway, etc. synergy and Canvas are their own animals and everything gets forwarded to the teacher
/ outlook address. Google is used for file sharing and signing in to several apps that MCPS has licenses for. Every teacher knows nobody checks Gmail. If Google and Microsoft played nice we wouldn’t need multiple accounts. |
Not the pp but this is not how emails work. |
I don’t understand this. Do you teach young children? Or never communicate with older students? They have gmail-based email addresses that end in .net. At my school, students are expected to check their email daily during advisory. |
Do YOU even know how emails systems work in a PROFESSIONAL environment? Plenty of companies use multiple systems (google, microsoft, inhouse) and yet manage to have a coherent email system. NOT MCPS! You will find NO other professional organizations that make electronic communication so complicated. So, given you are full of BS as far as "that's just the way it is", the relevant question is why would MCPS PURPOSEFULLY implement such a cluster-f of multiple email systems? No sane organization does that. |
+1 Many teachers we know check one occasionally and the other regularly but most are able to manage checking both accounts at least once a week. There's one teacher who is an exception but she's crazy. |
You are really grinding that axe today, huh? And showing your ignorance while you are at it. MCPS has one main email system for the entire district - Outlook. It's the email in the staff directory because everyone has it - teachers, administrators, central office, bus drivers, building services, etc. When MCPS purchased Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to create and manage student email accounts, staff also got equivalent versions. It is a choice for staff as to how to use their gmail account. Synergy is the only place that parents can manage their own information and attach a personal email to their account. Synergy mail isn't email - it is a messaging system that forwards to actual emails. Canvas also isn't an email system. It is just messaging within the platform that you can choose to set-up notifications as you wish. Just because you find electronic communication so complicated doesn't mean it actually is. |
I teach MS and never use Gmail to communicate with students. They know I expect them to communicate through Synergy. This platform is designed for teacher communication logs. Gmail is not. |
You log every email between you and students? |
Why do you need to log every communication? I’m a HS teacher and use both outlook and gmail to communicate with my students. So much easier than using synergy |
