Are all the schools like that?

Anonymous
My neighbor teaches first in our school, she says the first grade class is the worst she has EVER had. One teacher left mid-year with only two weeks notice, and another is planning to retire at the end of the year. Something about this class, specifically -- maybe because they spent the entire year before Kindergarten home with mommy and daddy and are spoiled out of their minds???

But the stuff my kids are telling me is shocking to me. My 1st grader is hearing insults from her peers everyday (not specifically directed to her): F word, middle fingers, mean comments. Boys who used to be her friends now tease her in the school bus, kids ganging up on others, calling them names. Things are even worse in my 3rd grader's class. A handful of badly behaved boys are disrupting class, calling names, N word... They seem to be popular too, which sucks for my son. As a result, the teacher's attention is going to the trouble-makers and the nice kids just go unnoticed. Did the parents just give up? Are the schools not enforcing discipline?

what is your greatschools rating, FARMS and demographics?

6/10 rating. Small school. Roughly 1/3 white, 1/3 asian, 1/3 latino. What does FARM stand for?

I know what school this is. The principal has ZERO SPINE and just wants the parents to be happy, doesn't care about the teachers ONE BIT and provides no support to them at all. They're quitting in droves.

Right, because there are no behavioral problems in AAP.

I think it is worse post pandemic. We used to have a few kids using curse words and being mean now it is common. Maybe it is the YouTube and tiktok influence, maybe we all forgot how to live by societal rules during the pandemic, but it seems much worse.

Oh, ti's been bad for at least ten years. Make sure your children know they can talk to you about what is happening at school.

I think our kids had some lingering PTSD from what they saw and experienced in FCPS K-8. I wish i were joking.

No one said that. You are delusional if you think the AAP classrooms have an equal number of discipline issues as the non-AAP ones though.

I taught kindergarten last year and it was unbelievable. Really really difficult.

But this year is going much better!

That sounds about typical and it doesn’t matter what your school’s SES/FARMS/racial breakdown is. Kids have basically unrestricted access to YouTube and the internet in general on tablets at home, and they’re not using it to watch Roblox videos and play ABC Mouse. AAP is SOMEWHAT better in that the worst behaved kids generally don’t apply, but there’s still a lot of disruptions.

Free And Reduced Meals

Ha! In my kids' school (which when they attended was considered to be in the top 1% of the nation), my son came home asking me what a p#ssy was. In kindergarten. He learned it on the bus from another student whose family probably had an HHI of a million dollars.

6 is not a good rating, look for 8 or higher, we left a 6 when the 2nd graders started wearing miniskirts and crop tops and asking our child about dating / kissing.

Sweetie, there is MORE of this as the high SES schools. My daughter has been begging us to buy her crop tops and ripped jeans and only from specific brands. Also her friends are wearing Sephora-bought makeup in 4th grade.

Ever heard of TWICE EXCEPTIONAL? The second "exceptional" there is code for "psycho"

Yep! That's why AAP is popular. The biggest benefit of AAP is that you'll be around other kids who really enjoy school and want to get good grades. They don't want to be kicked out of AAP.

There's no longer any way to get kicked out of school, so kids in regular don't care anymore.

YUP!

While there was a kid in AAP who regularly shouted out the F Bomb in class, I would still choose AAP over our high poverty base school. Too many parents don't care in regular Ed. In 2nd, my DD would beg me for high heels after a classmate came to school in hers. The kid wasn't prepared for gym class with sneakers but she had high heels. Of course, she got to sit around and color because she wasn't prepared.

How do you know which school OP is referring to? There are many 6/10 elementary schools in FCPS with very similar demographics.

Not seeing any of this at our elementary. But we have like zero socioeconomic diversity and a lot of rich SAHMs and overall high parent involvement even among the working parents. I think a lot of these issues are a product of parents being checked out or too overwhelmed to care what their kids are doing.
