Basketball - legal to yell in opponents' faces?

But screaming in an inbounders face makes your team look dumb

I don’t coach my rec kids to do it, but plenty of other teams do it. basketball is not a delicate sport, so if the yelling is going to rattle your player or you as the parent then you need to be prepared for it to happen. I’m sincere here. I’ve seen it in basketball, lacrosse, and even in volleyball (when someone is serving, for the receiving team to yell and break concentration). Sure it can be in poor taste but it’s sports.

And don’t get me started on parents heckling, in ALL sports, all levels.

If you want something with white glove treatment do golf. But get your daughter ready for it so she learns to tune it out.

This is OP - LOL, no. It's a middle school team. Some girls are brand new to basketball outside of their driveway. This girl clearly played ball on a better team outside of school but that made her behavior stand out that much more.

If it's a school team, there there will be AAU players and this is common in AAU. I've seen a defender shout out plays they overheard to drown out the in bounder. It was obnoxious as anything that I've seen in any sport, but the got the 5 second call.

Sounds like she did a smart play. It worked.

you talk and move on the court or sit on the bench and be quiet.

Those coaches are doing it wrong. Yelling “ball” on defense is to communicate to teammates that you’ve got the ball (I.e. that you are covering the ball handler). Nobody needs to do this on an inbound play.

It’s not illegal. But it seems weak.

Some do it in baseball too when the pitcher is throwing. Some umps will shut it down because it’s dangerous. But I’ve been at games when coaches are encouraging it and it’s really annoying.

I did think there was a rule about defending the inbound pass that you can't lean or enter into the out of bands play. Like there is an invisible wall that you can't penetrate

Makes me so thankful for CYO basketball. The refs are amazing and will tell the coaches to not let their players do that kind of stuff.

At a game on Sunday and witnessed it. The player was screaming and clapping in front of an opposing player. The ref looked at the coach, and the coach ignored the behavior. The ref blew a whistle walked over the coach and told him that he needs to correct his players.

The refs are so much better than the rec teams.

Lol. So the defense is being too aggressive and won’t just let your poor kids team execute?

I think all the moms of the girls who do this have found this thread. Do you see this craziness in boys games? Girls look so foolish doing this. Your kid doesn't look tough. They look desperate and that they need a gimmick to win. Maybe it will work the first time, but then any decent team will laugh about it and win.

Hate to break it to you, but CYO is rec and that's a rec level rule the ref was enforcing

I was at a girls HS varsity game this evening, of 2 very well known schools discussion on DCUM, and some girls were doing this.

I love the criticism here and people who have zero idea what the rules are, and apparently think they're daughters are too delicate to be involved in a full competitive/contact sport.

I posted upthread. My son’s nationally ranked high school varsity team didn’t do this kinds of weak nonsense. I agree that it looks pathetic and desperate.

Not basketball, but back in the early 90s while playing travel softball we used to whisper-chant “Hei-fer, Hei-fer” at the other team from the field when they were at bat. It was not nice. PP above is right that it’s a pathetic tactic.
