Stanford Sued After Following Another Student Suicide

Oh and one more thing, people think that Stanford has withheld a LOT of information about what happened to the family, and the lawsuit is in part so they can get discovery so they can figure out what really happened.

My impression is that this was pretty bad on the part of Stanford.

I wonder how many men accused of sexual assault at Stanford received an email threatening to withhold their diploma? I would be shocked if it were any. Certainly if a woman decides not to file a complaint, there is no discipline.

Meanwhile, she spills coffee. He doesn’t file a complaint. And Stanford still goes for the nuclear option. That’s an absurd over reaction. Did they learn nothing from Brock Turner?

Not a very good one if he would form an opinion based on very limited public information.

It's such a crazy over-reaction. All the time I'm reading the article, I'm thinking if there is another side to the story? Sadly, I do believe her parent's side and what they said in the article. It is just such a crazy over reaction.

Like why the overreaction? Will Stanford really go to those lengths to protect their football players?

My brother graduated from Stanford and first exhibited signs of schizophrenia-like mental illness while there. I later found evidence that he had been diagnosed while still a student. My family was never alerted. He proceeded to fall apart and explode his life in his 20s. He has still not gotten help/medication and has never supported himself…. The fact he was a Stanford graduate went from a badge of honor and achievement to a weight around his neck— a medal he would never live up to.

You are taking allegations as facts. Always a mistake without more info.

Even if Stanford handled the disciplinary hearing poorly, it’s quite a leap to they are responsible for her suicide. Her death was tragic, for sure, but rarely is a suicide anyone’s fault.

What type of judge would render an opinion before hearing both sides and examining all of the evidence ?

If he was over 18, the university can’t alert your family without his permission.

Privacy laws prohibit schools from telling parents about their student's health matters.

Generally when a story has one side acting in a nonsensical way, It I isn’t accurate. That’s why I think her parents are missing some facts.

I’m so furious. I was part of a similar incident at Dartmouth. The deans tried to push me into the campus disciplinary system and were pissed when I went to the Hanover police and asked to press charges. I was repeatedly asked by an administrator responsible for my access to course registration and on-campus job recruiting to drop the charges because it would be “better” to deal with it on campus. For them.

In the end, I stayed on campus during a break to testify in court. Unfortunately the prosecutor accepted a plea deal the day before. The incident- in which I had done nothing- ultimately affected my recruiting and my life after graduation.

Rest in peace, Katie Meyer. I hate what they did to her and respect her so much- anyone who doesn’t understand the power an institution has over its students in this kind of scenario is ignorant and naive. I wish they hadn’t cornered her like this.

Probably one who has no association with the case and is chatting with his wife over dinner.

Ahhhh. The “Stanford’s actions were so bad that it clearly could not have happened that way” defense. How did that work out for them with Brock Turner?

A lawyer signed his name to this. As Trumps lawyers are finding out, if the lawyer doesn’t have a good faith basis for the assertions, his law license is on the line.

We live very near to Palo Alto, so he has some inside information. Stay tuned. It will come out in the trial unless the family accepts a settlement.
