Options for a 13 year old this summer

We have a family member receiving nursing care in the home, and the agency won't let anyone be in the home under 18 unless there's another adult to supervise.

Would they be open to a signed waiver releasing them from any liability for your teen?

My kid will be 12 this summer and we are looking at the following camps/activities that are aimed at middle school and up kids (we're in Alexandria, so these specific camps won't work for you, but might provide some ideas).

Outdoor camp through Virginia Outside (rafting, hiking, kayaking, etc)
Rockclimbing Camp
Girl Scout camp (overnight, but reasonably priced, does Boy Scouts has something similar?)
learn to crew program
junior lifeguard camp
animal shelter camp (our local shelter has one for 11-13 year olds)

Are there any classes he might be interested in? If something is offered where he can take a morning or afternoon class and then be at the library or pool for the rest of the day (assuming it's somewhere he can get himself to) would that work? I'm thinking of fun classes, like an art class, cooking class, or coding class or something. Maybe some kind of sports clinic?

The swimming pool might hire a 14 year old to work at the snack bar.

No.

Yes but he isn’t 14.

My son has really enjoyed TIC camp the past couple years and it goes up through rising 10th grade I think. It'll be at The Langley School in McLean and Sidwell Friends in Bethesda if either of those would be convenient for you.

Washington Sailing down in Alexandria runs through the teen years and is really well run. Sailing is fun and a good skill builder. If going down there isn't feasible, they run a bus from Congregation BethEl in Bethesda.

Montgomery County recreation usually has a summer leadership camp for 13-16 year olds - relatively inexpensive for 2 weeks.
We also liked the Travelin Teens program through KAH - it's day trips, not prohibitively expensive.
Sport camps and special interest camps like coding are usually available to this age.
If your kid takes Metro comfortably, how about a few planned days playing tourist in DC? Hang out at Starbucks until the museums open, then visit various museums until 5. Could try similar days with the pool/library/shopping mall/downtown Bethesda/Rio at Gaithersburg, etc.

I would look for a new nursing agency, that seems like the most practical solution, plus they shouldn't be trying to dictate the rules in your home.

Is the learn to crew program the one through Titans Rowing? I want my son to try it, and it sounds good, but it won't provide coverage during the day - it meets early in the morning, and would end around the time I start work (he can take a public bus home).

That’s what we’re looking at, but just thought the idea might spark something for OP.

Ha ha ha,

I don’t think you have tried to manage in home skilled nursing care during a pandemic.

Cool, maybe our kids will wind up meeting there.
