Options for a 13 year old this summer

Anonymous
My 13 year old can’t stay home alone for reasons that don’t have anything to do with his behavior or maturity.

Last summer was relatively easy because lots of camps have options through 12 and if we’re still in this boat when he’s 14 he can work, but does anyone have ideas for this summer?

Could be a camp but also open to other options.

I should note that he can be alone in a public place. Like I can drop him at the pool or the ice skating rink but all day seems like a lot.

What grade and which school district/area? This will help us give you suggestions. I know of some programs for middle schoolers if you are in FCPS.

We might do a few weeks, but neither he nor I want him away all summer, plus that’s pretty financially prohibitive.

There are plenty of speciality camps for kids this age. Theater, coding, sports.

Then tell him to get a job as a mothers helper.

My son did a counselor in training program with the hopes of being a counselor in a year or two.

If you want supervision, at this age it’s going to need to be a camp which costs money. You could look into some place like a local zoo and see if they have a structured volunteer program in the summers. It’s basically free labor to them, but provides structure for you.

Do you belong to a pool? At my pool yes they could stay all day but it would be a lot of sun and get old after a while. I can see doing this for a day if meeting up with friends.

We have a family member receiving nursing care in the home, and the agency won't let anyone be in the home under 18 unless there's another adult to supervise.
