To the experienced parents, with a normal prep class - nothing over the top, what could we hope for SAT results? I'm not sure how to use this information, and would love real life experience. I would hope it would improve especially once A2H is done, but not sure what is realistic.

DS is a junior. Got a 1080 last year and we are waiting for his scores from this round. Only taking SAT for the first time in March 2023. Taking ACT in 2 weeks so we will see. He hasn't done any SAT prep so I am very curious.

Does anyone know what score is needed in PSAT to be a National Merit SF in VA?

It's different every year, but Virginia has a notoriously tough cutoff.

The score is weighted twice with verbal score and only once with math score, so those with higher verbal have the best chance. My DC strength is math, so will just miss the cut off in VA by a few points. Oh well, that’s life.

For this past year Virginia 221
Maryland 222
DC 223

How was your child offered the PSAT in 10th grade?

I thought it was only for students in the fall of junior year?

College Board is a business.
They now give PSATs in 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th.

Fairfax County Public Schools offer it to 10th and 11th graders (at least I assume since this is how it’s done at DC’s HS)

My son told me he got 980 on his PSAT. I think it's average, Is that good or bad?

I though most colleges don't require SAT scores anymore?

Ok. But the one taken in junior year is the only one used for National Merit scholarships, right?

My child got the same 10th grade score this year. Curious if you did prep and when? Child is a 10th grader currently in precalculus and I worry his score won’t go up much without prep.

I think every college went test optional around Covid time, for the high school classes of 21 and 22. Some are remaining test optional, and some are bringing it back. My son (current high school junior) took a tour of Purdue a few weeks ago and they said they are requiring the SAT or ACT for incoming freshman of fall 2024.
