If you saw a host leave a Turkey out of fridge for 3+ hrs before roasting it…

OP, are you the earlier poster whose mom had the turkey in the sink in water that you were upset about?

I'd eat it. A lot of chefs recommend bringing meat close to room temperature before cooking, it'll cook more evenly and not dry out. A turkey is so big that it takes forever for the internal temp to change, it's not like leaving a chicken breast on the counter. The interior was probably still pretty cold after 3 hours.

I wouldn’t even blink. Of course I would eat it.

I had mine out on the counter for one hour and it was still super cold. I’m sure it’s fine.

+1

And have you ever cooked a turkey? The PP Qs about defrosting etc are like thanksgiving 101

If it was cooked properly yes.

Of course!! That’s often necessary & it won’t make you sick, geez!

No, basic food safety is 4 hours for cold, 6 hours for hot.

It’s fine and actually preferable to bring meat as close to room temp as possible before cooking, especially something large like a turkey that you don’t want to be raw in the center and burnt on the outside.

I have never once heard 4 hours for cold, 6 hours for hot. I'm not even sure how to interpret that. I have ALWAY read/heard/been advised two hours room temperature max. Any reputable food safety source is going to tell you this.

I would not eat this turkey.

Um, I grew up with grandparents who owned several turkey farms. Every year my grandmother roasted many dozens of turkeys and endless pies and sides for people to come pick up and pass off as their own.

Nothing wrong with a pre-cooked cold turkey sitting out on the counter for a few hours to come to room temperature before cooking. *After* cooking is when sitting for hours leads to exponential bacteria growth. Basic food safety.

Yes.

That's a no from me and probably anyone else who has had food poisoning before. It's just not worth it. Id stick the the sides.
Anonymous
Absolutely. I grew up during an era and place where nobody knew anything about food safety. Food never makes me sick. Alcohol does though.

What a weird response. Are you watching Fox News as you leave your turkey out on the counter all day?

3 hours is now all day?
