How often do you or your family eat sweets?

Everyone in my family has 1 or 2 small bars of German chocolate each night after dinner. Just did the math and they are 73 calories each, so that’s what I mean by small.

If things like dried fruit, box cereal, or maple syrup in oatmeal count, then close to daily. For things like ice cream, candy, cookies, I buy them at the store sometimes if we are in the mood. There is a box of frozen bonbons which I bought a few days ago and DS was excited about them. We each had one and we both forgot about the box until I just thought about it with this thread. Cookies are similar. I buy a batch at Whole Foods or bakery and we often split a big one and just try to pair with pb or cheese or some other protein.

People may think I am too restrictive but we do have a lot of family history of diabetes. DH’s family eats a big bowl of ice cream after dinner every night along with cookies, chips, and chocolates. As far as I know there had only been age related diabetes in his family.

We don't have a set of days or anything. Dh and I? Probably once or twice a week. The kids? Maybe 3-5 times a week?

My husband eats sweets maybe two or three times a day.

I eat sweets probably once every three or four months. I'm not really a sweets person.

The kids typically get a cake or sweet treat once every 7-10 days or so. But they have fruit for dessert every night.

I always thought my husband just had a sweet tooth but from reading this thread I am wondering if it is just a cultural norm in the US to have a proper dessert after dinner.

I'm not originally from here and when I was a kid, we got sweets for special events, holidays, birthdays, etc. so that's what I did with my kids. I kind of feel like a mean mom now.

You are fine. In this country most supermarket food has a lot of added sugar anyway. I was surprised to see how much sugar a “healthY” brand of bread or a “healthier” cereal actually has. Your kids are getting plenty.

Daily for husband and kids. Less often for me, only because I don't have much of a sweet tooth.

I bake a lot- mostly because I would rather have fresh baked goods as opposed to lots of processed stuff. I try to do the "healthier" baking for breakast foods- zucchini cake, etc. I would say the majority of the sweets we consume is breakfast with occasional dessert but I don't buy packaged desserts. Mostly if I buy sweets it is ice cream. Occasionally I'll surprise everyone with themed donuts or cupcakes from local small businesses. We definitely all have a sweet tooth though!

Every day. We eat very healthily all day with lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, etc. We also exercise a lot and are very active. I eat ice cream or other sweet every evening while watching TV.

I used to restrict sweets out of fear of overeating and feeling like I would binge. It turned out that for me, the restricting was causing the binging. I'm going on a couple years now of no rules regarding sweets and my body really has adjusted and I'm able to self-moderate. We keep a variety in the house, but we all are in tune with our bodies and there is no guilt placed if something doesn't get finished and goes bad. As an example, today after lunch I had one chocolate covered peppermint Jo-Jo and was more than satisfied. We had a large dinner and I was full, but still wanted something sweet so I had a couple bites of blueberry pie and am saving the rest for breakfast. I know you didn't ask, but since really getting more in tune with my body and my cravings my weight has completely plateaued into a healthy place.

Pretty regularly but I'm a diabetic pastry chef.

One of my kids does not like sweets and neither does my DH. The other one has allergy issues. We normally don’t keep many sweets around the house for that reason.

If there’s candy, cakes, cookies around the house, I’ll definitely eat them. Maybe not huge portions, but snacking for sure. If I make a cake I half the sugar because I don’t love overly sweet things. And I don’t like ice cream. But with the Halloween candy, I’ll eat a piece or two a day. If DH brings home nice desserts for a treat I’ll have one. That kind of thing.

+1
And it’s the kids that have strict rules and restrictions at their homes who come to ours and search out sweets and have zero self control. I just cleaned out the pantry and tossed tons of Easter candy. My kids have unlimited access so actually rarely eat sweet stuff.

Agree with this. My kids can get dessert every night if they want it. Sometimes they want something sweet right after school, sometimes not. One of my kids doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth and usually only wants dessert if we are having ice cream - I don’t measure the servings, maybe a cup plus some chocolate sauce? The other two do ask for dessert just about every night - a popsicle or two in the summer, a few cookies. They have syrup when we have waffles and might still get a treat after school and/or after dinner. And some days we have nothing sweet at all! It’s not some forbidden or highly regulated thing. DH doesn’t like sweets and only has them once or twice a week. I’m probably more like 5 days a week, either cookies after lunch or something after dinner.

A neighbor kid has parents who are super restrictive about food and sweets. Every time she comes over, she goes right for the candy! My mom was the same way when I was growing up and it was awful - I gained a ton of weight in college because I never had the chance to learn to regulate my own food consumption. Had to figure it out the hard way as a young adult.

Not really that often. I don’t really like sweets and DS goes through phases where he might eat a whole jar of Nutella in 2 or 3 weeks, then eat nothing sweet for two months. We don’t really do junk food either. We’re not super healthy- we do sandwiches, quesadillas, stuff like that, but try to stay away from packaged food.
