Alternative to Wegmans

I don't care if they want to get rid of plastic bags, but they need to have handles on their paper bags. It's hard to carry paper bags without handles. It's annoying enough that I rarely shop at Wegmans.

Also, the paper bags are not thicker quality like Whole Foods. They are cheap thin bags.

They should have both. The brown bags are always bursting and can’t handle frozen items. I use the plastic bags for trash.

This is a good point. They just need better bags. I've never had a Whole Foods bag break on me.

I personally think this whole discussion is a bit ridiculous about stores providing specific types and better quality bags. If you want specific or better bags, buy your own reusable, sturdy bags with handles. Many people have already been doing this for years now. More places should stop plastic bags. Also if you need trash bags - just buy them, it’s not a stores job to give you them for free.

They are more convenient. I am not interested in bringing in a reusable bag. Those are health hazards, and I wonder if they contributed to the illnesses that have going around.

WF has handles and they tear if you try to put a gallon of milk in one.

How are reusable bag health hazards? Most sickness don’t spread thru reusable bags.

Are you pouring raw chicken into the reusable bag? No? Then you should be good.

I’ve been using reusable since before whenever DC passed the law in 2010 (more religiously since) and I’ve probably had something gross happen only a handful of times. I do use the plastic bags in the meat section as extra protection though.

It is not required for most sickness to spread a certain way for something to be a health hazard. Many locations that had gotten rid of plastic bags brought them back to reduce spread of covid.
People are not regularly cleaning these reusable bags.

How do you know OP isn’t doing this?

For me in VA, Wegmans has the best fruit but poor lettuce, Giant has the best produce overall, Safeway has crap produce but better beer and dry goods, and Costco has meat and eggs. WF and HT are not convenient to me.

Three Giants near me all have awful produce.

Good point, people put those reusable bags on the floor of their house, elevator, trunk. Then the bag often goes on the end of the conveyor belt at checkout while packing up the food that is at the end of the conveyor belt. I have some germaphobic tendencies. But this is true. All the food at the end of the conveyor is indirectly touching the floor of someones house, bus floor, metro floor, etc

I mostly shop at Costco and sams club for this reason and use self checkout. No one bringing their disgusting bags to those stores. Also, the employees don’t even touch the food to put on the shelf. Much cleaner.

Safeway has the best produce
Trader Joe's has the best bagged produce - apples, limes, lemons, potatoes, onions
Giant's produce lacks that freshness look, only good when they have specials on stuff like strawberries
Wegman's produce reminds me of Giants quality

The plastic bag thing is really annoying, I agree. I still shop there, if not there then Harris Teeter.

I wish more stores would get rid of them or at least take those ridiculously small bag holders out of self checkout. There is space foe good sized bags, but they never fit well because of the bag holders. If I try to put my bags on the holder they get stuck.
This is my biggest complaint at my local HT. There’s no room for my bags. They could at least clear one space. There are three spaces with the bag holders at each self-checkout. Not necessary.
