Expelled.

A teenager brought a gun to school, but it wasn’t dangerous?

Correct. It was locked in his car. We live in Virginia. Honestly, it’s not abnormal here, especially the farther away you are in Fairfax.
Adults have them. I have one. Sometimes I use my car.

I live in Fairfax. Yes, that’s abnormal and completely unsafe. I’m originally from Texas, and it’s still unsafe ( though more common) there.

I heard he didn’t even realize it was in there.

We have had three children go through the middle school and were very pleased with the experience. We found the teachers to be accessible, knowledgeable and knew just when to push and when to pull back. The poster above was partially incorrect-HS students were suspended and two HS students were expelled for vaping. The new headmaster is fantastic as is the middle school director. I encourage you to take a tour and see for yourself. There are a lot of trolls on this board who shit on the school-its unfortunate.

+1 We've got kids at FH too. We've been very pleased with the school academically. I think because it has a learning center for those who need it and it draws a sort of bell curve of student it gets dumped on as being no better than a public school. As someone whose kids came from public I will say that the small class sizes and attention to each student is wholly different than a public school and I think it has helped our kid grow academically in a way they wouldn't have been able to in public where you're just a number. We specifically chose it because it doesn't have a grinder reputation. We're not interested in that energy.

As for kids getting in trouble, I know plenty of families with kids in NOVA publics other area privates and kids get in trouble all over the place. FH doesn't sound like an outlier.

The Heights school

I believe FH US has more of a zero tolerance policy especially given the pledge every student is expected to sign. The kids were expelled for having vape cartridges and then I heard something about taking video of other students without their knowledge (in the lobby). Last year there was expullsion for fighting too.

Pay no attention to the public school parent trolls.

+1 Langley or Potomac would be a better choice.

Langley doesn't have a high school

Langley is not better, but it’s wealthiest students tend to get into better colleges after attending DC private or boarding schools.

The OP was asking about middle schools.

I'd sure like to know the "bang for the buck" of FH compared to public school.

Anyone have one kid who did FH and another who did (say) Rachel Carson able to offer a comparison?

They aren't elitist. They are just uniformed. Lot of people just come here to cut things down so they feel better about themselves. OP you should check it out for yourself. If you are trying to get an objective opinion on private schools, financial advice, car buying advice, what to do about your annoying neighbor or questions about masking protocol, this really isn't the site for you. I come here for the entertainment, not to crowdsource ideas on anything meaningful.

I'm not a public school parent; my child goes to private school.
