Heron is illegal. Cocaine is illegal. Human trafficking is illegal. Yet, they all proliferate underground.

If new firearm purchases were outlawed, they would simply move underground as well. People who wanted a gun could find one.

Reducing gun violence involves looking at how we glorify gun violence in our nation, and how a small group of people make billions of dollars each year by marketing movies, games, and other media products that identify killing people with guns as "cool."

Making it harder to buy guns legally would reduce gun violence.

You think the kid in sandy hook would’ve gone to nyc to buy an AR on the street?!

If new gun purchases were banned nationwide (which is politically impossible at the moment anyway), then an underground market would inevitably emerge across the country (not just in cities or urban areas) offering customers access to illegal firearms either made conventionally or with 3D printing technology. Gun violence would continue. Mass shootings would continue.

Go spend some time as an Anglophone in Quebec, or go spend some time in Saskatchewan or Alberta. See what you think then.

Yes, but the odds of surviving a suicide attempt by gun is the lowest of all the methods

And it has been proven that if there were a short waiting period to obtain a gun, the chances of that purchased weapon being used to commit suicide go down

This was discussed by the author of dying of whiteness on his WITHpod episode a couple years back

Is it worse than having to spend time with MAGA hat wearers?

Then explain Australia.

They don't have a 3000 mile border with a country of lunatics that has more guns than people.

Regulate guns the way cars are regulated. Agree!

Yep. Making murder illegal doesn’t stop murder. Making drunk driving illegal doesn’t stop drunk driving. Let’s overturn those laws too.

Also, what about all of the suicide????????? That is so common in our country. And it has been proven that when access to lethal means is reduced, suicides are reduced.

It may sound counter intuitive, but it is absolutely known. Many suicides are impulsive.

Lots of different methods of suicide exist.

It has been shown over and over that suicide is an impulsive act and when there’s not easy access to a gun, people don’t seek out a different way to die. It’s like the nets on the Golden Gate Bridge. People didn’t drive to another bridge to jump when they couldn’t use the Golden Gate Bridge. They just didn’t jump.

+a million. My BIL, a man who had grown up around guns and owned several, killed himself with a gun while waiting for a mental health appointment. I suppose he could have killed himself in a different way, but there's nothing faster and more efficient than a gun pointed to your brain.

I'm the pp, and I sadly have an extended family member who SURVIVED putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger. No idea HOW that was survivable...or how you go on after that. Haven't seen this family member in over 10 years and I'm just very sorry for the immediate family who now deal with the consequences every damn day.

But yes, easy access to a gun makes suicide attempts particularly lethal.

There's a word for posts like these. Fatalism. Nihilism.

The three suicides in my family — none used a gun or drugs. Shrug Anecdotal I know. The one that took place earlier this year was a 19yo who had access to hunting guns (his side of the family, not mine, hunts) didn’t use a gun.

Easy. Apples to oranges. Different country, different history, different system of government, and different cultural mindset re: firearms.

I guess the Aussies are just better people than us. It’s sad that we as a people would rather wallow in our mediocrity than try to do better.

Kids ages 0-19 killed by guns in 2020:

United States: 4,350

Canada: 48
Germany: 14
Australia: 10
UK: 8
Japan: 5

The above 5 countries combined have the same population as the United States and 85 total child gun deaths.

Enough said about apples to oranges. We are all human. Something needs to be done.
