Did he get into Blair? Not sure how this is relevant if not.

I'm trying to share my positive non-panic attitude, I guess.

I’m not panicking at all. That my kids score is the mean of those admitted is great and very encouraging! He’s steadily 99th percentile. Just not one of the kids with 300+ scores. I know he’d do very well in the program but we’ll see.

300 and 270 are both 99% for the fall of 8th, and they use the percentile since the test wasn't designed to differentiate between fractions of a percent.

That’s not what they said on Monday night.

It sure was.

Were you actually there? What he said was that he didn’t remember the exact mean MAP score but that parents could email him to find it out. He did not say anything even remotely like the actual score doesn’t master anyway because we look at percentiles only.

It's been discussed here openly for years that percentiles are used since comparing the RAW scores is meaningless. If you'd asked them about this, I'm sure they would've told you as much.6

What is discussed on DCUM often doesn’t have any bearing on what fact is. Just because someone repeats it regularly here doesn’t mean it’s true.

^^ exactly what you're saying has no bearing on the reality that NWEA didn't design this test to differentiate between the 99.1 and 99.99999% and MCPS knows this

Well, the higher raw score shows significantly more outside enrichment and allows students (from wealthier families) the edge they deserve from all that hard work!

In that case why are they sharing the mean scores for last years entrance? BECAUSE they use them!

Doesn’t NWEA also say this is a test to measure growth not achievement? Which begs the question, why is MCPS using it to gage academic standards not growth? But I guess your claim is that they ignore that guidance from NWEA but only go with the suggestion to look at percentile only? Am I right or do you have another explanation/claim? Personally I’d love it if there was confirmation that they use percentiles only as my child is at 99.1 percent or so, but there really isn’t any evidence that you are correct, after all they explicitly say that they look at MAP scores not at MAP percentiles.

Because some parent asked for it. They never claimed it was meaningful.

I guess it does, but so what. The growth between 99.1% and 99.9% is 0.8%. It mostly just shows that some were engaged in significant outside enrichment.

Way to completely miss the point. If MCPS only looks at percentiles because that’s what NWEA tells them to do, why do they not also only look at growth because that’s what NWEA tells them to do?

I don't know why you're attacking MCPS or yourself by implying "wealthier families" are doing what MCPS, or you as a parent, can't?

Exactly, we supplemented ourselves with workbooks (you can get them at target dollar spot and dollar tree or online worksheets), and other things and now use the free mcps tutoring.
