So discrimination against Asians is cool because otherwise we're just ushering in Mussolini? Get a grip.

DP but get a grip. There is no discrimination against Asians when it comes to admission to TJ. Asians make up 20% of the students body in FCPS but take up to 70% of the seats at TJ.

Jews make up 2% of the population and 22-24% of the Ivy schools - some 11 times the size of the population. Complain about that before complaining of Asians.

PP isn't complaining about it; PP is illustrating why a court will not see a valid legal claim of disparate impact discrimination against a minority population that holds a majority of seats. There are two ways to prove discrimination, one of which is disparate impact. Disparate impact is proved by statistics and this case doesn't have numbers on its side, which was PP's point.

Now do disparate treatment (discriminatory intent).

Also, in considering disparate impact, some would look at who was affected the most by the change, which is another statistic, and not just at whether a particular group remains “over-represented.”

The intent was to level the playing field after there had been widespread cheating (e.g. people buying test answers).

The intent was to reduce the percentage of Asian kids and increase the percentage of non-Asian kids living in three magisterial districts - Lee (now Franconia), Mason, and Mount Vernon - who couldn't get into TJ on merit.

Stated in a legal non-discriminatory way: The goal was to provide for representation at TJ for all FCPS middle schools and thus serving all county tax districts and students overcoming financial or ESL challenges that have traditionally served as a bar to entry and a denial of this important population of FCPS student body the enhances the overall learning experience.

That’s some serious word salad.

And if suddenly a single school was admitting them at only the rate of 15% of its student body I would think the same thing - that alleging discrimination doesn’t feel like strong ground to stand on when the admittance level is still so high.

And everyone expects it to continue to go back up close to its prior percentage level.

The new system is still gameable with moving and/or fraudulently filling out the free meals form being the two easiest ways to gain admittance.

It needs to be changed to either a lottery or an open enrollment academy model.

If people are willing to MOVE for it let them. That is not something most will do just for a chance at TJ. Not enough to skew things. As for the free meals points - yes they should institute checks to verify this.

Agree 100%. Those who wanted to change TJ did their utmost to de-legitimize the school, not quite realizing that the new process has de-legitimized the school even further.

No one really knows what TJ stands for now, other than some type of an affirmative action project, where people are asked to pretend the school is still admitting the best and the brightest when it is very obvious it is not. It’s becoming a joke of a school, even among those who used to covet admission to TJ the most for their kids.

Better to stop the fiction and make TJ a pure lottery or a full-time academy program.

Believe it or not, some people like the idea of sending their kids to the school because of what it offers and not because of its prestige level.

Whether or not some people look down their noses ag it now is pretty much irrelevant to me. But we’ve never been seeking “THE BEST” neighborhood/school/etc., we just do what we think will work best for each of our kids.

Oh no! The meals question was a stroke of genius. They were able to verify and catch many of the cheaters which helped detoxify TJ.

Just the opposite. Some are frustrated because they can no longer easily game admissions but that's more of an improvement.

Some will fight the decline in TU’s standing and reputation but it is already happening and now seems inexorable.

It’s actually meaningless. You just end up with a school with slightly less than totally random kids bused to a school in Alexandria and told they are special when they aren’t. Why expect others to play along?
