If you think Teddy is too juvanile, he could always transition into Ted with age. But I agree with pps that you shouldn't expect to switch from Teddy to Theo.
FWIW, Theodore was my grandfather's name. I would have loved to use it in some way, but my cousin beat me to it and named their son Theodore (goes by Theo, my grandfather went by Ted). I like the middle names you picked too. |
I know a little boy that is Theordore Rex, after the president. Goes by Tad, which I think is darling. |
This is our boy name too! We're going to use Theo.
Love it! |
I had a coworker named Theodore who went by Ted and would get superpissed if you called him Theo. I think Theo and Teddy are both great names, but I don't think you could do from Teddy to Theo. Teddy to Ted. Or just Theo for his whole life. Theo isn't too juvenile in my opinion.

Fabulous! |
I'm a pp who likes both nicknames. If the family starts with one nickname and then they or he want to switch, I don't see that as an impossibility. My husband goes by a typical nickname for his first name that his family virtually never used--he liked it when people used it, and now it's how he introduces himself. I've never in his life called him by his full name, even though that's the name others in his family use. I know a friend who went by her first name as a child, then switched to using the middle name for a few years, then returned to the first name. Names are pretty malleable. |
OP here, I appreciate everyone's comments! I like Theo but my husband doesn't like it quite as much, and I think we are both happy with calling the baby Teddy - but I agree with PP, I'm hoping that if he wants to go by Theo, he'll be able to make the switch. But if it ends up being Ted (which I don't like as much as Theo), that's fine too.
Still unclear on the middle names, may need to go back to the drawing board. Thanks for the comments! |
OP, how about Roosevelt as a middle name? Or you could just do what the original T.R. did and not have any middle name. |
Is that a joke? Theodore Roosevelt? |
Dear god, I hope not! |
Theodore is a great name. Congrats! I'm not wild about the middle names, but you'll find something that fits. |
I love this name! It's our little boy name too. We have also chosen a C name as the middle name. It seems like there will be lots of Teddy's running around soon.
Kids always handle the nickname issue to suit their personality. I changed the spelling of my nickname at 10 and split my nickname in two later on (good old southern hyphenating). I really like Tad as a nickname. I might try it since my mother is horrified by Theo, thanks to one she knew is the 70s. |
Theodore is a family name for me. For other sources of nicknames beyond Ted and Theo, might I rmind yu that the Polish for Theodore is Thaddeus, pronounced approximately as, "Todjo."
So, you might also want to consider thad or todd as nicknames. |
The above is incorrect. (I am American but my parents are Polish immigrants and I go back to Poland often.) The Polish for Theodore is Teodor. The Polish for Thaddeus is Tadeusz. Thaddeus and Theodore are both different names in Polish as they are in English. Personally, I would think it odd to use Thad or Tad as a nickname for Theodore, since it is a nickname for Thaddeus, and they are two different names, but to each her own! (Also, as a tangent, have no idea what the above PP was getting at with "pronounced Todjo"--that makes no sense at all! The "j" in Polish is pronounced as a "y" sound in English.) |
OP here, funny we were just talking about Thad yesterday. I do think you could use any nickname anyway (since plenty of nicknames are not remotely based on given names). But my husband doesn't like Thad! |
