If anything Maryland and VA screwed out of tax dollars. This is cash cow DC. Collecting taxes and providing no services |
Right, exactly. However, the spouse is still a tax payer of one of these states so they are legit when it comes to enrolling kids in the local schools. I get why cities do this. I also think it's messed up that they exempt first responders from this requirement. They should either apply it to everyone or no one. |
Wait. You work in the DC government and don't know a single resident? Do you not see the problem with this? You don't know any of the people for whom you work? |
Not well enough for this. I am supposed to on a teams meeting say hey can I file my taxes and put my drivers license at your moms home address in DC. I can’t use a coworkers address they audit that. So no |
| Do an activity to meet people who live in DC! Go to church, volunteer somewhere, hang out at a bar — it’s not that hard. I’m sure plenty of folks would love to rent you a room that you don’t use. |
|
Just to be clear, you are a DC city employee and asking for advice about how to commit residency fraud.
OP, the taxes and drivers' license are one thing, but a bigger reason the city has this requirement is because you have skin in the game with regard to city services and operations. If you can't meet that, you should turn down the raise and/or find work in MoCo. |
Some UPS stores offer mail boxes that look like real addresses. Would that work? |
| I'm sorry! Why would DC residents help someone trying to con DC? You earn here, are required to live here, move home or move job. Don't try to illegally game the system. Is it a good lesson to teach your children? |
| Renting a UPS store mailbox in DC will gives you a DC street address. |
| OP, think about this rationally. If you have been living just fine being slightly under the 150k threshold, is it worth it to spend the extra money to rent a place you won’t use, and to lose certain tax breaks because you are going to file taxes separately from your spouse? If you don’t need the raise and don’t want to deal with the hassle of trying to figure out how to commit fraud, just don’t take the raise. |
| Employers are literally begging people to come work for them. Find a new job that doesn't make your life more complicated and force you to walk the balance beam of legal vs illegal. The federal government has thousands and thousands of openings, I am sure you can find something comparable. |
Eh, the only one "gaming" the system is the DC government. He will literally be paying DC taxes while using none of the services. As a DC resident and tax payer, I thank him for paying for my kid's PreK3 and highly subsidized aftercare! |
This. Find a better employer that doesn't require you to live in the city. There is no amount of money that would make me want to live in DC, and clearly you feel the same. If that's not doable, I'm sure that you can find a super cheap basement somewhere that you never go to. That'll be the easiest rent collection for that landlord! |
|
It is a 25k raise that put me in this position. Not really worth it. I got six months to quit, get demoted or move.
DC sucks |
+1. OP is a low moral person. |
