Notre Dame, Purdue, and Indiana are plenty for a sate in the middle of the country. It could be a good deal for certain kids, but you need to be extra careful for the reasons for the low demand. See if those factors are not big factors for you. |
a lot of schools including high demand schools are in shitty locations. i.e. Notre Dame |
This, plus many of them give great merit aid. |
Dudes worried about the gender ratio at RHIT should keep in mind that Indiana State is just a few miles down the road, and those second-tier state school chicks love Rose dudes (and their future money!). Easy to smash! |
the rose hulman booster is back |
Maybe because very few people have ever heard of it. |
My personal opinion and what I've noticed over the last few years of going through the application process with kids and friends-- Big schools are very popular right now. I think smaller schools are not as popular. I'm not necessarily talking about this list, but more in general across the U.S. I have lots of family in the flyover states. In general, the big state schools are where it's at for most of the country. I think some of the big state schools aren't as good academically as they appear on the rankings (please don't flame me). I know of one very popular state school (on this list) where some really really smart people went who called the large lecture classes baby-sitting and they spent their time teaching themselves. I have two kids in these big state schools and one in a small LAC. The kid getting the best education is at the smaller school. I went to a big state school. I am not against them. I'm just not sure the little schools and big schools are well represented by the admissions rate. Sadly, most kids in the U.S. want the best party scene that will hand them a diploma. The majority of the U.S. isn't looking for great academics. If your kid fits at Rose Hulman, they will soar there and get lost in the big state schools. Don't let the rankings and the popular opinions scare you. Honestly, the people who made the great discoveries in this world, didn't follow the same path as the majority. And, I've always thought of Rose Hulman as a really good school for engineering. But everyone wants to go to IU and Purdue where there are more parties. |
Who is Rose Hulman? And, more importantly, who are you to question her virtue by implying she's so easy to get into? |
I think PP is right that the strong in-state schools nearby decrease the demand for Rose Hulman. I grew up in Indiana, and all of my friends interested in engineering (6 of them, I think) went to Purdue. I'm not sure a single one of them even looked at RH. From the perspective of most of these people, why pay much more (discounting any potential merit aid) when you can go to what they considered a better school for much less.
Plus, most of the engineers you know growing up in Indiana went to Purdue. It seems like such an obvious choice. I'd expect the same is true for people in Illinois (with UIUC), Michigan (UMich), Wisconsin (UW), etc. And Terre Haute is a pretty crappy place to go to school. They don't call it the "armpit of Indiana" for nothing. I did know one person the year behind me who went to RH, loved it, and has been very successful. If that's the kind of school you're looking for, it's great. I'm just explaining the thinking of all the people interested in engineering who don't go there. |
I love this. Yes! If you find a school that is in every way a good fit for you, why should you care what the guy down the street thinks of it or if he's ever heard of it. People in engineering will know about it. One of DD's schools has a high acceptance rate but has really impressive opportunities in her area of interest. She may end up there over a much higher ranked reach, and that's fine. |
You just won the internet for today. Thank you for this laugh! |
Hey, it is 2022. Any chance you can not refer to young women enrolled in college as, “chicks” who can be lured into a relationship based upon the male’s future earning potential. That is sexist on so many levels. And also quite dated. |
Jesus Christ. |
Yes, sad that that post was written by an adult. |
