+1 Definitely getting that vibe on a few of the replies. Seems like a school that attracts lots of MAGAs. 29% "very conservative" https://www.niche.com/colleges/rose-hulman-institute-of-technology/students/ Hard pass. |
If majority is getting accepted but only minority without better options are enrolling, its unlikely to be an intellectually, academically or socially a rigorous or enriching environment. |
+ certainly not competitive or challenging. |
There's no reason to think that the replies on this post, nutty or otherwise, are connected to or reflect the views of anyone associated with the school. |
It is really hard to find good engineering programs at smaller schools. They're all odd in their own way. Olin, Cooper Union, Harvey Mudd. They all attract "types." Rose Hulman is a perfectly good engineering school. But that kind of gender imbalance in Indiana is unlikely to be a healthy place for a lot of people. Generally, if you're going to do engineering, which is a hard major with a lot of suck, it's better to do it in the bigger schools. More resources. More peers. More chance of a healthy community and relationships. More everything. |
Native Hoosier here, my cousin went to Rose Hulman and loved it. He does something with engineering army tanks in Detroit now. I know he stays in touch with a lot of buddies from undergrad. All that said, he grew up in a house with a single mom and three sisters so the 75% male thing called to him in a way it might not to others, lol. |
Bc it's expensive and Purdue has a really good engineering school and is much less expensive in-state and probably out-of-state, without looking up the number. |
Kind of a no brainer unless you have money to burn and need a small engineering school. |
Thanks for the nuanced reply. I’m sure the people with daughters at Indiana State will be happy to hear their kids have excellent social opportunities outside of the confines of ISU. |
Something wrong with being Alt Right? |
Look at Clarkson. |
Or put in an application and see if they come through with aid. You never know. |
It's not even in Terre Haute. It's outside of Terre Haute. Really isolated location. |
My DC is looking at smaller schools for CS (and my DH is an engineer). DH has heard of Rose Hulman and says good things about it, but we didn't consider it for my lgbtq child. An acquaintance was strongly considering it for her son last year and had many great things to say about their visit there and interaction with professors etc. My child's current favorite is Colorado School of Mines. It is bigger than RH, but not huge. Others that were suggested but I don't have personal knowledge about: WPI. (I really wanted my DC to look at this one - it sounds great to me. They weren't interested for whatever reason.) Stevens Institute of Technology Illinois Institute of Technology University of Tulsa |
There are a decent amount of west coast students at WPI, about 400 from Wash, Oregon, CA. DS is pretty happy there and extremely engaged. Lots of like minded students. |
