I think PP is right that the strong in-state schools nearby decrease the demand for Rose Hulman. I grew up in Indiana, and all of my friends interested in engineering (6 of them, I think) went to Purdue. I'm not sure a single one of them even looked at RH. From the perspective of most of these people, why pay much more (discounting any potential merit aid) when you can go to what they considered a better school for much less. Plus, most of the engineers you know growing up in Indiana went to Purdue. It seems like such an obvious choice. I'd expect the same is true for people in Illinois (with UIUC), Michigan (UMich), Wisconsin (UW), etc. And Terre Haute is a pretty crappy place to go to school. They don't call it the "armpit of Indiana" for nothing. I did know one person the year behind me who went to RH, loved it, and has been very successful. If that's the kind of school you're looking for, it's great. I'm just explaining the thinking of all the people interested in engineering who don't go there.
